No. 2 Women’s Tennis sweeps No. 7 Baylor, 7-0

Howard Joffe earns his 100th dual-match win as head coach of the Longhorns.
AUSTIN, Texas — The No. 2 University of Texas women's tennis team (16-1, 5-0 Big 12) posted an impressive 7-0 victory against No. 7 Baylor (17-3, 4-1 Big 12) on Sunday afternoon at the Texas Tennis Center. With the win, Howard Joffe earned his 100th dual-match victory as head coach of the Longhorns.
Texas registered its 10th victory of the season against a ranked opponent. The Longhorns have now recorded 11 sweeps in their first 16 wins this year. UT improved to 76-11 (.874) in dual-match singles play and 34-6 (.850) in dual-match doubles competition this season.
The Longhorns grabbed a 1-0 lead by earning the doubles point for the 16th time in its first 17 dual matches this year. The No. 40-ranked duo of Mel Krywoj and Angie Shakhraichuk opened the action with a 6-2 win on court 1 against UT's freshman tandem of Kylie Collins and Lulu Sun. The loss snapped a nine-match win streak by Collins and Sun.
Senior Marta Perez Mur and freshman Peyton Stearns claimed a 6-4 victory on court 3 over Kris Sorokolet and Jessica Hinojosa to even the count in doubles. Playing together for just the third time in dual-match play, Perez Mur and Stearns recorded their first win.
The No. 80-ranked pair of seniors Fernanda Labraña and Anna Turati clinched the doubles point by earning a 6-2 win on court 2 against Livia Kraus and Alicia Herrero-Linana. Labraña and Turati jumped out to a 4-0 lead and cruised to the win, moving to a perfect 11-0 in dual-match doubles play this season.
No. 49 Collins overcame a 4-3 deficit in her first set to register a 6-4, 6-3 victory on court 4 over Shakhraichuk. Collins improved to 11-2 in dual-match singles action, including a 5-0 mark in Big 12 play. Labraña broke a 3-3 tie in the first set against No. 71 Kraus and went on to record an impressive 6-3, 6-2 win on court 5. Labraña moved to 15-2 overall in singles, including an 8-1 mark in dual-match play.
No. 26 Turati clinched the overall dual-match victory with a dominant 6-1, 6-2 win on court 2 over Hinojosa. Turati improved to 13-2 in dual-match singles action this year, including a 5-0 mark in Big 12 play.
Playing out the match to completion, the remaining three singles matches went to three sets. No. 31 Stearns rallied for a 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-4) victory on court 1 against No. 59 Krywoj. In the third-set super breaker, Stearns won three of the first four points and built leads of 5-2 and 8-3 before closing out the 10-4 win.
No. 90 Sun followed with a 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-7) win on court 3 over No. 111 Herrero-Linana. After dropping her first set, Sun trailed for the majority of the second set. Tied at 5-5, she won back-to-back games to take the second set by a 7-5 score. In the third-set super breaker, Sun snapped a 7-7 tie by winning the next three points to close out her victory and move to 11-2 in dual-match singles action, including a 4-0 mark in Big 12 play.
Freshman Malaika Rapolu closed out Sunday's match with a 6-0, 4-6, 6-4 victory on court 6 against Paula Barañano. This match progressed to a third set prior to Turati clinching the overall dual-match win, so the third set was played to completion. Tied at 4-4 in the final set, Rapolu held serve and then broke Barañano to finish the win. Rapolu improved to 16-2 overall in singles this year, including a 9-1 record in dual-match play.
UT returns to action when it hosts Texas State in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday, March 30. First serve is set for 2 p.m. Central at the Texas Tennis Center.
