Sun named Big 12 Women’s Tennis Player of the Week

UT freshman went 4-0 in singles and doubles to lead the Longhorns to a pair of Big 12 dual-match wins last week.
AUSTIN, Texas — University of Texas freshman Lulu Sun has been named the Big 12 Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday afternoon. Sun, who went a combined 4-0 in singles and doubles while leading UT to a pair of Big 12 dual-match wins last week, earned her first career weekly conference honor.
Sun became the fourth different UT player to claim Big 12 Player of the Week honors this season. Freshman Peyton Stearns garnered the award on Feb. 2, while freshman Kylie Collins received the accolade on Feb. 9 and senior Anna Turati claimed the honor on March 30.
In Friday's 6-1 win at No. 49 Kansas, Sun paired with Collins to earn a 6-4 win on court 1 against Sonia Smagina and Vasiliki Karvouni. She returned in singles to register a 6-4, 6-4 victory on court 2 against No. 102-ranked Malkia Ngounoue.
During Sunday's 7-0 sweep at K-State, Sun again teamed with Collins to claim a 6-3 win on court 1 over Karine-Marion Job and Maria Linares. She returned in singles to tally a 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) victory on court 2 against Linares.
On the year, the No. 7-ranked duo of Sun and Collins has posted a 13-2 mark in dual-match doubles action (all at the No. 1 spot), including a 5-1 mark in Big 12 play. In singles, the No. 72-ranked individual in the latest ITA rankings, Collins is 14-2 in dual-match singles action, including a 6-0 mark in Big 12 play.
No. 2 Texas (20-1, 7-0 Big 12) returns to action when it travels to face No. 29 Texas Tech in a Big 12 Conference match on Friday, April 16. First serve is set for 2 p.m. Central at the McLeod Tennis Center in Lubbock.
