Freshman duo wins 6-0, 6-1 over No. 2-ranked team in Round of 16 to earn ITA All-America honors.
ORLANDO, Fla. — The University of Texas freshman duo of Kylie Collins and Lulu Sun posted a dominant 6-0, 6-1 victory against No. 2 Sara Daavettila and Cameron Morra of North Carolina on Tuesday evening in the Round of 16 of the NCAA Doubles Championships at the USTA National Campus.
With the win, Collins and Sun earn ITA (Intercollegiate Tennis Association) All-America honors by virtue of advancing to the NCAA quarterfinals. Collins and Sun also become the first pair of ITA All-Americans in doubles at UT since Cristina Moros and Sandy Sureephong earned the accolade in 1998.
Collins and Sun, No. 19 in the ITA's latest national rankings, held serve in the opening game and broke the UNC pair in the following game to gain an early 2-0 advantage. After holding serve again, the Longhorns earned a service break on a deciding point to make it 4-0. Collins and Sun held and broke for a third time to complete the 6-0 first-set shutout.
After each team held serve in the opening two games of the second set, Collins and Sun held and claimed another service break to grab a 3-1 lead. From there, the Longhorns won the final three games to close out the victory and improve to 24-4 overall in doubles this year, including an 11-3 mark against nationally-ranked opponents.
Collins and Sun will face the No. 8-ranked tandem of Andrea Garcia and Nandini Das from Florida State in Wednesday's quarterfinals at 5 p.m. Central (6 p.m. Eastern).
