Stearns claims singles All-America accolades, while Collins/Sun receive doubles All-America recognition.
AUSTIN, Texas — University of Texas Women's Tennis freshmen Peyton Stearns, Kylie Collins and Lulu Sun garnered All-America honors from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) following the release of the organization's final individual rankings on Wednesday. Stearns received the honor in singles, while Collins and Sun earned the accolade as a doubles pair.
Stearns is the fourth Longhorn player during coach Howard Joffe's six seasons in Austin to earn ITA All-America honors in singles. She joins Breaunna Addison in 2016, Bianca Turati in 2018 and 2020 and Anna Turati in 2020. Collins and Sun are the first pair of ITA All-Americans in doubles at UT since Cristina Moros and Sandy Sureephong earned the accolade in 1998.
In singles, the criteria for All-America honors include earning a top-16 seed into the NCAA Singles Championship, advancing to the Round of 16 at the NCAA Singles Championship or finishing in the top 20 of the ITA rankings. In doubles, the criteria include earning a top-eight seed into the NCAA Doubles Championship, advancing to the quarterfinals at the NCAA Doubles Championship or finishing in the top 10 of the ITA rankings.
Stearns earned All-America recognition in singles as she was No. 13 in the final ITA singles rankings. The Most Outstanding Player at the 2021 NCAA Women's Team Championship, she completed her freshman season with an 18-8 overall singles record, including a 13-4 mark in dual-match play at the No. 1 singles spot.
Collins and Sun garnered All-America accolades in doubles, as the pair met two standards of qualification. The tandem advanced to the finals at the NCAA Doubles Championship and were No. 5 in the final ITA doubles rankings. Collins and Sun became the first UT pair to reach the NCAA Doubles final since Moros and Farley Taylor in 1996. They concluded the season at 26-5 overall in doubles and posted a 13-4 mark against nationally-ranked opponents, including a 5-1 record against opponents ranked in the Top 10.
In the final release of the ITA singles and doubles rankings on Wednesday, the Longhorns had five players tabbed in singles and three pairs included in doubles. In addition to Stearns, UT was represented in singles by senior Anna Turati (No. 48), Sun (No. 58), freshman Charlotte Chavatipon (No. 68) and Collins (No. 93). In addition to Collins and Sun, the Longhorns were represented in doubles by Stearns/Chavatipon (No. 44) and senior Fernanda Labraña/Turati (No. 45).
Texas posted a 31-1 overall dual-match record in 2021 and claimed its third NCAA team title in program history. The Longhorns ended the season on a 24-match win streak. UT's 31 dual-match wins established a school single-season record, topping the previous mark of 29 set by the 1983-84 team (29-7 mark).
