New York – Men's Tennis sophomore Eliot Spizzirri will continue his run at the U.S. Open after being selected for a wild card to the doubles main draw on Friday.
Spizzirri will reunite with Tyler Zink, who was his partner in winning the doubles title of the 2019 U.S. Open Junior Championships and is currently at Oklahoma State.
Spizzirri completed play in the singles qualifying draw on Thursday, coming up just short to ATP No. 130 Henri Laaksonen of Switzerland, 3-6, 7-6 (6), 6-4, after topping ATP No. 163 Alejandro Tabilo of Chile, 5-7, 7-6 (0), 6-3.
This summer, Spizzirri won his first pro singles title when he took the championship of the ITF Futures in Decatur, Ill. That came on the heels of his winning the doubles title at the ITF Futures in Champaign, Ill., the week before, which was his second doubles pro title.
Spizzirri led the Longhorns to their second consecutive NCAA Final Four this past season, while playing at No. 1 in both singles and doubles. With final ITA rankings of No. 15 in singles and No. 7 in doubles, he earned All-America honors in both while partnering with Siem Woldeab in doubles. He was also a unanimous first-team All-Big 12 selection in both and was the Big 12 Individual Co-Champion at No. 1 singles.
Draws and match schedules for the U.S. Open doubles tournament will be announced on Monday, August 30.
