Los Coast supports the First Ladies of Hip-Hop on the LBJ Lawn prior to Texas Football’s game versus Rice
Austin, Texas – International hip-hop icons Salt-N-Pepa will headline Longhorn City Limits prior to Texas Football's game versus Rice on September 18. LCL, the acclaimed gameday concert series, opens at 2 p.m. on the LBJ Lawn, located on the northeast corner of DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium, with FREE pregame and postgame activities. All concerts are FREE and open to the public.
"Salt-N-Pepa have influenced millions of fans and an entire generation of artists during their illustrious career," said Vice President and Director for Athletics Chris Del Conte. "We can't wait for Longhorn Nation to enjoy the hip-hop icons at Longhorn City Limits on September 18."
"Push It" — Salt-N-Pepa's signature party-pumping anthem started out meaning one thing and turned out to mean something else. Something bigger. Because in a 35-year-career that took them from Queens to rap royalty, the duo of Cheryl "Salt" James and Sandra "Pepa" Denton have pushed it real good as a trailblazing duo that changed the game for women in hip-hop. In the golden age of the genre that they helped put on the music map, they became, quite simply, the First Ladies of Hip-Hop.
Now the pioneering pair are living legends who get to see their legacy playing out while they're very much still making moves. "Over the years, we've had every female rapper come up to us and say that we were their role models," says Salt. "We were their inspiration. We were the reason that they felt like, as women, they could do this in a man's world. It just gave me another level of appreciation for what we experienced as well as what we accomplished."
Salt-N-Pepa became the first female rap act to have an album go gold and then platinum. They became, along with Queen Latifah, the first female MCs to win a Grammy. They have become international superstars, taking hip-hop from Russia to Australia. And they still have the best-selling album of all time by any female rap artists: their 1992 blockbuster Very Necessary. "We have done it all," Pepa says simply.
Los Coast, Austin's own quartet delivering punchy psychedelic-pop soul led by Trey Privott and John Courtney, kick things off on Sept. 8. Influenced by soul and funk, Los Coast began their rise with 2019's Samsara featuring memorable tunes such as "Simplify", "Monsters", "Graves", and "(Everything but) the Kitchen Sink." In 2020, their collaboration with Gary Clark Jr. on Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come" rose to the top of the streaming charts. They're currently working on their highly anticipated second album.
The fan-favorite silent disco returns to Longhorn City Limits following the game. Featuring three live DJs, participating fans receive a pair of wireless headphones and the ability to choose between three different channels.
In addition, fans can enjoy all of the LCL amenities on the LBJ Lawn including the Deep Eddy Lounge. This season, the cocktail garden will be twice as large with twice as much shade for fans ages 21 and older to enjoy craft cocktails. Fans can also enjoy happy hour pricing** at Longhorn City Limits, including $5 16-oz. domestic beers and $6 16-oz. premium beers. Stubb's Bar-B-Q will also return to the lawn with the best BBQ in town.
