Marcus Carr leads four Longhorns in double-figure scoring with a team-high 14 points.
AUSTIN, Texas — Senior Marcus Carr registered a team-high 14 points to pace No. 23/22 Texas (14-5, 4-3 Big 12) to a 56-51 victory against Oklahoma State (10-8, 3-4 Big 12) on Saturday afternoon at the Frank Erwin Center. The Longhorns, who entered the game leading the nation in scoring defense (55.2 ppg), improved to 14-0 this season when holding their opponents below 60 points.
Carr hit 2-of-5 three-pointers and was a perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw line while adding four rebounds and two assists in 32 minutes. Senior Tre Mitchell posted 12 points (2-4 threes), and senior Timmy Allen tallied 11 points (5-9 FG), eight rebounds, three assists, two steals and one blocked shot in 31 minutes. Senior Courtney Ramey also reached double figures in scoring with 10 points and a season-high seven rebounds in 39 minutes.
Defense and free throw shooting proved to be the difference for the Longhorns in their victory. Texas limited Oklahoma State to 51 points on 37.5-percent field goal shooting (21-56), including a 2-of-9 mark (.222) from three-point range. The Longhorns also converted 14-of-16 from the line, including a 12-of-13 mark in the second half.
Texas raced out to a 13-0 advantage following a Christian Bishop dunk at the 16:16 mark, as the Longhorns converted their first three attempts from beyond the arc. The Cowboys responded with a 16-0 run over the next 10 minutes to grab a 16-13 cushion after an Isaac Likekele jumper with 6:17 left. A Carr three-pointer at the 6:01 mark ended a scoreless drought of 10:15 for the Longhorns and tied the game at 16-16.
Oklahoma State built a 20-16 advantage following a D. Williams jumper with 3:46 remaining and maintained the lead for the remainder of the half. A Bishop layup with 29 seconds left pulled Texas to within 27-25 at the break.
The Longhorns scored the opening four points of the second half and took a 29-27 advantage following a Ramey layup at the 17:27 mark. After a Bryce Thompson free throw tied the game at 29-29 with 16:26 left, Texas used a Dylan Disu putback and an Allen jumper to grab a 33-29 cushion at the 14:44 mark. The Longhorns did not relinquish the lead for the remainder of the contest.
An Avery Anderson III free throw pulled the Cowboys to within 39-37 at the 8:05 mark, but Texas responded with a 9-2 run over the next two-plus minutes to build a 48-39 advantage following a pair of Carr free throws with 5:50 remaining. After Oklahoma State trimmed the margin to three points (50-47), Mitchell hit a jumper from the foul line to give the Longhorns a 52-47 cushion with 56 seconds left. Ramey hit a pair of free throws with 11 seconds remaining, and Carr converted two free throws with five seconds left to seal the victory.
Texas returns to action when it travels to face TCU on Tuesday, Jan. 25. Tip is set for 8 p.m. Central at the Schollmaier Arena, and the game will be televised nationally by ESPNU.
