Sonya Morris led the Longhorns with a game-high 21 points.
STORRS, Conn. — The No. 3/3 University of Texas women's basketball team outscored No. 5/6 UConn 16-6 over the final 4:40 of the game, but came up short, 83-76 on Monday at Gampel Pavilion.
Sonya Morris led Texas (1-1) with 21 points and freshman Ndjakalenga Mwenentanda came off the bench to score a season-high 13 points. Aaliyah Moore and Taylor Jones also scored in double-figures with 11 and 10 points respectively. Jones added eight rebounds. Shaylee Gonzales scored six points and added a team-high six assists.
Texas outscored Connecticut 25-20 in the fourth quarter of the game and held a 27-16 advantage in bench scoring.
The Longhorns shot 29-of-56 (51.8 percent) from the field and 8-of-18 (44.4 percent) from 3-point range.
Up next the Longhorns travel to Paradise Island, Bahamas for the Battle 4 Atlantis Tournament, Nov. 19-21. Texas will start against Marquette.
