Bishop posts a game-high 16 points to top the 1,000-career point mark during victory in the Jimmy Blacklock Classic.
AUSTIN — Super senior forward Christian Bishop registered a game-high 16 points to reach the 1,000-career point mark while leading No. 2/2 Texas (7-1) to an 88-43 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff (3-8) on Saturday afternoon at Moody Center in the Jimmy Blacklock Classic. Bishop has now recorded 1,012 career points in 132 collegiate contests.
The Jimmy Blacklock Classic honored the first recruited African-American scholarship basketball player for the Longhorns. Blacklock, who was recognized both pre-game and during halftime on Saturday, led the team in scoring (16.6 ppg) and was the team's MVP in 1970-71. He was the team captain in 1971-72 when the Longhorns won the Southwest Conference title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16.
The Texas bench provided a huge spark in Saturday's win, as the Longhorns tallied a 49-8 advantage in bench scoring. Bishop posted a season-high 16 points (7-10 FG), nine rebounds (four offensive) and four assists in 20 minutes. Graduate Brock Cunningham added a career-high 13 points while converting 5-of-6 field goals, including a 3-of-3 mark from three-point range, in 15 minutes. Freshman Dillon Mitchell posted a career-best 13 points (6-7 FG) in 20 minutes, and super senior Timmy Allen posted a season-high nine assists against just one turnover and seven boards along with four points in 22 minutes.
The Longhorns set team season highs in field goals made (37-65), field goal percentage (.569), three-point field goal percentage (.409) and assists (30). Texas limited UAPB to 43 points on 33.3-percent field goal shooting (17-51), including a 6-of-22 (.273) mark from three-point range. UT allowed just six assists while forcing 22 turnovers.
A back-and-forth opening seven minutes featured 10 lead changes and two ties. After a Chris Green three-pointer gave the Golden Lions a 16-13 advantage with 13:59 remaining, the Longhorns used an 8-0 spurt to grab a 21-16 cushion following a Sir'Jabari Rice three-pointer at the 11:40 mark and never trailed again.
A Kylen Milton three-point play trimmed the deficit to 25-24 with 8:42 left, but Texas responded with six-straight points to increase its lead to 31-24 after a Bishop layup at the 6:41 mark. A Green layup on the following possession cut the gap to 31-26, and the Longhorns answered with a 12-0 run over the next four minutes to build a 43-26 lead after another Bishop layup at the 2:17 mark.
Bishop and Cunningham both had impressive first-half performances to help Texas claim a 46-30 halftime cushion. Bishop posted 12 points on 5-of-6 field goal shooting, seven rebounds and two assists in 12 minutes during the opening half. Cunningham added 11 points on 4-of-4 field goal shooting, including a perfect 3-of-3 from three-point range, in nine minutes of action.
The Longhorns opened the second half with a 10-2 spurt over the first four minutes to take a 56-32 lead following a Dylan Disu layup with 15:56 remaining. The Golden Lions trimmed the deficit to 17 points (56-39) after a pair of Green free throws at the 14:01 mark, but that was as close as UAPB would get the rest of the way.
Leading 61-41 with 12:06 remaining, Texas went on a 21-0 run over the next eight minutes to increase its lead to 82-41 after a Disu jumper in the lane at the 3:55 mark.
Texas is back in action on Monday, Dec. 12, when it hosts Rice. Tip is set for 7 p.m. Central at Moody Center, and the game will be televised nationally by Longhorn Network.
