No. 7/8 Men's Basketball tops Rice, 87-81, in OT

Carr records a season-high 28 points to lead the Longhorns to home victory.
AUSTIN — Graduate guard Marcus Carr posted a season-high 28 points to lead No. 7/8 Texas (8-1) to an 87-81 overtime victory against Rice (6-3) on Monday night at Moody Center. Carr tallied eight points during the overtime session while converting 2-of-2 field goals and 4-of-4 free throws.
Associate Head Coach Rodney Terry served as acting head coach during Monday's contest.
Carr posted season highs in scoring, field goals made (9-16) and minutes (42) and tied his season high in three-point field goals made (4-7). Super senior Timmy Allen tallied 15 points (7-9 FG) in 22 minutes of action. Freshman Dillon Mitchell recorded 12 points (career-high 6-6 FT), nine rebounds and three steals in 32 minutes, and graduate Sir'Jabari Rice added 11 points and four assists in 34 minutes. Graduate Brock Cunningham registered a season-high 10 rebounds (five offensive) and six points in 27 minutes.
Rice jumped out to a 9-4 lead following a Quincy Olivari three-pointer at the 17:08 mark. After a pair of Mitchell free throws evened the score at 11-11 with 12:49 remaining, the Owls used a 9-0 spurt over the next three minutes to build a 20-11 cushion after another Olivari three-pointer at the 9:29 mark.
Texas answered with a 6-0 run over the next two minutes to trim the deficit to 20-17 following a Carr three-pointer with 7:43 left. An Allen jumper cut the margin to 22-21 at the 6:20 mark, but Rice responded with an 8-0 spurt to take a 30-21 lead after yet another Olivari three-pointer with 4:02 remaining. The Owls increased the margin to as much as 10 points (33-23) following an Olivari three-point play at the 2:23 mark, before the Longhorns closed the half with six-straight points to trim the deficit to 33-29 at the break.
Mekhi Mason hit 1-of-2 free throws to give Rice a 34-32 cushion at the 17:32 mark, but Texas answered with a 7-2 spurt to grab a 39-36 advantage following a Christian Bishop dunk with 15:58 left. Olivari converted 1-of-2 free throws at the 9:11 mark to even the score at 55-55, before Texas ran off six-straight points to build a 61-55 advantage after an Allen jumper with 6:46 remaining.
Another Allen jumper provided the Longhorns with a 63-58 cushion at the 6:17 mark, but Rice responded with an 8-0 run to take a 66-63 lead following a Travis Evee three-pointer with 4:42 left. Carr answered with a three-pointer at the 4:05 mark to tie the score at 66-66, and neither team led by more than two points for the remainder of regulation. Olivari hit a pair of free throws to even the contest at 72-72 at the 1:32 mark, and both teams were held scoreless for the remainder of regulation.
In the overtime period, the Longhorns converted 5-of-7 field goals and 5-of-6 free throws while outscoring the Owls by a 15-9 margin. Texas scored the first seven points to open the extra session and build a 79-72 cushion following a Rice layup with 3:03 left. Another layup from Rice pushed UT's lead to 83-75 with 1:21 remaining, and the Owls were not able to trim the margin below four points the rest of the way. Carr (eight) and Rice (seven) scored all 15 points for the Longhorns in overtime.
Texas returns to action on Sunday, Dec. 18, when it faces Stanford in the Pac-12 U.S. LBM Coast-to-Coast Challenge in Dallas. Tip is set for Noon Central at American Airlines Center, and the game will be televised nationally by ESPN2.
