NEW YORK — Super senior forward Timmy Allen posted a season-best 21 points, eight assists and seven rebounds, but No. 2/2 Texas (6-1) dropped an 85-78 decision in overtime to No. 17/17 Illinois (7-2) on Tuesday evening in Madison Square Garden as part of the Jimmy V Classic. The Longhorns held a 63-58 advantage with 60 seconds left in regulation but could not close out the contest, and the Fighting Illini outscored Texas by a 17-10 margin in overtime.
Allen set season highs in points, assists, field goals made (9-18) and minutes (40). Sophomore Tyrese Hunter added 10 points, seven rebounds and four assists in 33 minutes. A total of seven Longhorns scored at least seven points in the loss.
The opening 20 minutes featured six lead changes and five ties, and neither team led by more than five points. After a Dain Dainja layup cut the Texas lead to 10-9 with 15:01 left, the Longhorns used a 5-1 spurt to build a 15-10 cushion following a pair of Sir'Jabari Rice free throws at the 12:55 mark.
A Christian Bishop layup gave the Longhorns a 17-12 advantage with 11:27 remaining. Illinois responded with an 8-2 run to take a 20-19 lead following a Matthew Mayer three-pointer at the 9:45 mark. A Mayer layup gave the Fighting Illini a 28-24 cushion with 5:28 left, but Texas answered with a 7-0 spurt over the next minute to grab a 31-28 advantage following an Arterio Morris three-pointer at the 4:23 mark. Illinois used a 9-1 run to build a 37-32 lead after a Dainja dunk with 22 seconds left, before a Hunter jumper with three seconds remaining trimmed the margin to 37-34 at the break.
Another Mayer three-pointer increased the Illinois lead to 42-36 with 18:30 remaining. Texas responded with a 20-4 run over the next 10 minutes to build a 56-46 cushion after a Dillon Mitchell layup at the 8:28 mark. Illinois answered with a 10-2 spurt to trim the margin to 58-56 following a R.J. Melendez three-pointer with 4:36 left.
A Marcus Carr jumper in the paint gave Texas a 68-63 advantage with exactly one minute remaining in regulation. Jayden Epps knocked down a three-pointer with 33 seconds left and hit a pair of free throws with eight seconds remaining to tie the score at 68-68 and send the game into overtime.
Terrence Shannon Jr. had 12 of his 16 points in overtime, as Illinois hit 4-of-7 field goals and 8-of-11 free throws in the extra session to seal the victory.
Texas returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 10, when it hosts Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the Jimmy Blacklock Classic. Tip is set for 12 p.m. Central at Moody Center, and the game will be televised nationally by Longhorn Network.
