MADISON, Wis. — The No. 1 University of Texas Women's Tennis team dropped a 4-1 decision to No. 8 Oklahoma on Saturday evening at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in the quarterfinals of the ITA (Intercollegiate Tennis Association) National Team Indoor Championship. With the loss, Texas falls into the consolation bracket and will face No. 4 California in its final match of the tournament on Sunday, Feb. 13 at 3:30 p.m. Central.
The Longhorns (6-1) had their 30-match win streak snapped in the defeat. The streak dated back to a 4-3 loss to then-No. 1 North Carolina in the championship match of the ITA Indoor Nationals on Feb. 7, 2021.
The Sooners (10-0) took a 1-0 lead after claiming the doubles point. Oklahoma's tandem of Anchisa Chanta and Emma Staker posted a 6-3 victory on court 3 over UT's freshman pair of twin sisters Allura Zamarripa and Bella Zamarripa. Tied at 3-3, Chanta and Staker won the final three games to close out their match.
OU's No. 9-ranked tandem of Carmen Corley and Ivana Corley clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 victory on court 1 against sophomore Kylie Collins and freshman Sabina Zeynalova. The Longhorns' duo held a 3-2 lead, but the Corley sisters ran off four consecutive games to claim the win. UT's sophomore pair of Peyton Stearns and Charlotte Chavatipon held a 5-1 lead on court 2 over the No. 42-ranked tandem of Layne Sleeth and Alexandra Pisareva when the doubles point was clinched.
The Sooners increased their lead to 2-0 when No. 57-ranked Ivana Corley claimed a 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 win on court 3 against Chavatipon. Corley raced out to a 5-2 lead in the opening set, before Chavatipon rallied to win three straight games and force a tiebreaker. In the breaker, Corley jumped out to leads of 4-1 and 6-2 before closing out the 7-3 win.
The Longhorns trimmed the margin to 2-1 after No. 42 Stearns posted a 6-3, 7-5 victory on court 1 against No. 15 Sleeth. Stearns knocked off the nation's top-ranked singles player in straight sets on Friday night and continued her strong start to the season. After winning the opening set, Stearns found herself down 5-2 in the second set. She broke Sleeth and held her own serve on a deuce point to climb within 5-4 before winning the final three games to close out the match and improve to 9-0 overall this season in singles, including a 6-0 mark in dual-match play.
No. 35 Carmen Corley followed with a 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 victory on court 2 over No. 26 Collins. After splitting the opening two sets, Collins held a 3-2 lead in the third before Corley won four consecutive games to close out the victory.
No. 103 Staker closed out the dual-match win with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 victory on court 6 against sophomore Malaika Rapolu. The remaining two singles matches featuring Zeynalova on court 4 and freshman Vivian Ovrootsky on court 5 were stopped when the dual-match victory was finalized.
