Aliyah Matharu records a team-high 17 points as the Longhorns drop game one of the weekend series
WACO, Texas — The No. 13/13 Texas women's basketball team suffered a 75-63 Big 12 Conference defeat at No. 9/12 Baylor Friday evening inside the Bears' Ferrell Center.
With the loss, the Longhorns slip to 15-5 overall with a 5-4 mark in league competition. Baylor moves to 16-5, 6-3.
The Longhorns founds themselves playing from behind early as the Bears opened the game on an 18-7 run in the first quarter. Texas trailed 42-34 heading into the break.
UT trimmed the deficit to three points, 48-45, at the 2:44 mark of the third quarter but Baylor responded and outscored the Longhorns 27-18 the rest of the way to seal it.
Junior guard Aliyah Matharu paced Texas offensively with a team-best 17 points on 5-of-11 shooting including a 4-of-6 mark from three-point distance. She also added four rebounds and went 3-of-3 at the charity stipe.
Rori Harmon finished with 10 points and dished out a team-high six assists. Lauren Ebo led the team on glass with six rebounds.
Texas finished the game shooting 37.3 percent (22-of-59) from the field with a 62.5 percent (5-of-8) mark from three-point range.
Turnovers proved costly one again as the Longhorns committed 20 giveaways in the game which led to 25 points for the Bears.
Texas held a 34-30 advantage on the glass but Baylor controlled the paint outscoring the Longhorns, 28-18.
NaLyssa Smith paved the way offensively for the Bears finishing with 25 points on 10-of-12 shooting. She also led the team with eight rebounds.
Sarah Andrews finished with 17 points and Ja'Mee Asberry tallied 15 points.
Texas is back in action on Sunday , Feb. 6 , as they gear up for the second leg of this weekends' series as they host the Bears inside the Erwin Center. Tip is slated for 3 p.m. and will air nationally on ESPN 2.
