AUSTIN, Texas – No. 3 Texas women's track and field Tyra Gittens was named to The Bowerman Watch List on Wednesday. After being a finalist for the 2021 Bowerman Award, this is Gittens first appearance on the watch list this season.
Gittens is fresh off a runner-up performance in the high jump at the Big 12 Indoor Championships with a jump of 1.84m (6-0.50). The 2021 NCAA Indoor High Jump champion enters the 2022 NCAA Championship tied for the third-best mark in the county at 1.88m (6-2.00).
In her first appearance as a Longhorn, she wrote her name into the Texas record books as the No. 4 performer in Texas history with the jump of 1.88m. She also earned Big 12 Athlete of the Week honors for the win.
Teammate Julien Alfred was receiving votes after the first update on February second after leading the NCAA in the 60m dash with a time of 7.10 seconds.
The Bowerman, first awarded in 2009, is presented annually by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) to the year's most outstanding collegiate male and female track and field athletes (indoor and outdoor combined).
The Bowerman will release an updated women's watch list on March 23 after the NCAA Indoor Championships. The watch list represents the consensus among members of The Bowerman Watch List committees in regard to who is currently on their radar for consideration to win this year's award. These student-athletes may or may not have competed yet this year, but based on past credentials have the attention of the committee.
