Marcus Carr records a game-high 23 points and seven assists to lead the Longhorns.
MILWAUKEE, Wis. — Senior guard Marcus Carr posted a game-high 23 points and seven assists, but No. 25/25 dropped a hard-fought 81-71 contest against No. 10/9 Purdue (29-7) on Sunday evening at Fiserv Forum in the NCAA Tournament Second Round. The Longhorns conclude the season with a 22-12 record, marking the most wins in a season since 2013-14.
Carr converted a season-best 8-of-18 field goals, including tying a season high with a 4-of-8 effort from three-point range, and added seven assists against just two turnovers in 37 minutes. Senior Andrew Jones recorded 17 points while hitting 6-of-13 field goals and 3-of-4 free throws and added two steals in 34 minutes. Senior Christian Bishop posted 10 points and seven rebounds in 23 minutes.
Texas was plagued by foul trouble and a huge disparity at the free throw line during the contest. Purdue hit 33-of-46 free throws on the night, while the Longhorns were 7-of-12 from the stripe.
Texas jumped out to a 12-6 lead following a Courtney Ramey three-pointer at the 15:45 mark. After a Carr layup gave the Longhorns a 14-8 advantage with 15:03 remaining, Purdue used a 20-0 run over a stretch of nine minutes to build a 28-14 cushion following a pair of free throws from Eric Hunter Jr. at the 6:08 mark.
The Longhorns ended a drought of 9:44 when Andrew Jones converted a jumper with 5:19 remaining. A Trevion Williams layup gave the Boilermakers a 30-18 advantage at the 4:19 mark, but Texas responded with a 9-1 spurt over a span of 1:32 to pull within 31-27 after a Jase Febres three-pointer with 2:47 left. Purdue increased its margin to 36-28 following a Zach Edey tip-in with 12 seconds left, and Carr answered by knocking down a jumper with three seconds left to trim the deficit to 36-30 at the break.
Despite its long scoring drought, Texas remained in the game in the first half by converting 6-of-14 from three-point range while limiting Purdue to 1-of-7 shooting from beyond the arc. The Longhorns also committed just four turnovers in the opening 20 minutes.
A Jaden Ivey dunk gave the Boilermakers a 38-32 advantage with 18:59 left, but Texas scored five straight points to pull to within 38-37 following a pair of Carr free throws at the 18:21 mark. The Longhorns took their first lead since the 10:53 mark of the first half when Dylan Disu converted a layup to put UT in front 41-40 with 15:52 remaining.
Tied at 52-52 after a Christian Bishop layup at the 9:32 mark, Purdue scored seven-straight points to take a 59-52 advantage after a Williams layup with 7:51 left. The Boilermakers extended their lead to 72-62 following a pair of Ethan Morton free throws at the 2:29 mark.
Jase Febres converted a four-point play with 2:22 left, and Carr knocked down a three-pointer at the 1:31 mark to pull the Longhorns to within 74-71. Ivey answered with a three-pointer on Purdue's next possession to push the margin back to 77-71 at the 1:01 mark, and the Boilermakers added four free throws in the final 40 seconds.

Team Notes
- This marked UT's 36th overall appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Texas is now 36-39 all-time in the NCAA Tournament.
- UT fell to 4-2 in the all-time series against Purdue. Four of the six contests have come in the NCAA Tournament (tied 2-2).
- Head coach Chris Beard is now 11-5 in five NCAA Tournament appearances. Beard is a perfect 5-0 in NCAA First Round games and has never lost to a lower-seeded opponent in the Big Dance.
- The Longhorns faced 10 opponents during the season that advanced to the NCAA Tournament. UT played a total of 16 games against NCAA Tournament teams and posted six wins against NCAA tourney opponents.
- UT converted 10-of-28 (.357) from three-point range on the evening. The Longhorns reached double digits in three-pointers made in both of their NCAA Tournament contests (10-of-19 vs. Virginia Tech). Prior to the Big Dance, Texas had not made at least 10 threes in a game since the Longhorns hit 10-of-24 against UTRGV on Dec. 3.
- Texas posted 16 assists against just seven turnovers on the night. In UT's two NCAA tourney contests, the Longhorns recorded 33 assists against just 16 turnovers.
- Purdue converted 33-of-46 from the free throw line, while the Longhorns were 7-of-12 from the stripe.
- Texas tallied an 11-9 advantage in offensive rebounds and a 20-15 margin in fast-break points.
