AUSTIN, Texas – For the second time in her Longhorns career, Tyra Gittens was named the Big 12 Performer of the Week.
After the first time returning to Texas A&M after transferring in the fall, Gittens put on a show in College Station in the dual meet against the Aggies. The All-American and Bowerman Watch List honoree scored eight points to lead Texas over A&M 102-100.
The Trinidad and Tobago native outdid Lamara Distin on her home track to win the high jump with a mark of 1.95m (6'4.75"). The jump equaled Gittens previous personal-best jump and equaled the E.B. Cushing facility record.
The winning jump equals the Texas program record with Destinee Hooker and Erin Aldrich. Hooker last set the record in 2009. Gittens' jump is also the second-best in the NCAA this season and ranks as the second in the world.
Gittens added the final two points to the team score in the long jump with a second-place finish after just three jumps. She finished with a jump of 6.58m (21'7.25"). She is now the No. 4 performer in Texas history.
