Piperi and Blazevica Named Big 12 Champions

LUBBOCK, Texas – Tripp Piperi and Kristine Blazevica were both named Big 12 Outdoor Champions on the second day of the conference meet.
Piperi claimed his ninth Big 12 Championship shot put title on Saturday with a throw of 21.28m (69-9.75). It's the ninth-straight meet Piperi has thrown over 21 meters. Jalil Brewer finished second with a throw of 19.12m (62-8.75), while Patrick Piperi finished seventh at 18.14m (59-6.25). The Longhorns added 20 points in the event.
Blazevica defended her 2021 heptathlon title by breaking into the 6,000 point club with a personal-best score of 6,064 points. Blazevica is now undefeated in conference meets, having won all four multi competitions she has competed in as a Longhorn.
Phillip Frank set a personal-best score in the decathlon with 7,188 points and finished sixth to score three points.
Marilyn Nwora added six team points by finishing third in the shot put with a throw of 17.20m (56-6.25). Olivia Buntin recorded a personal-best in the pole vault to finish fifth with a mark of 4.15m (13-7.25) and added four points to the team score.
The Longhorns long jump squad scored 19 points, with Tyra Gittens finishing third on the women's side with a jump of 6.57m (21-6.75), Stacy Brown Jr. also finishing third with a jump of 7.76m, Leo Neugebauer in fifth at 7.65m and Jathan Belaire in sixth at 7.62m.
Allyson Little was the last Longhorn to score on the second day of the championships with an eighth-place finish in the 3000m steeplechase.
Julien Alfred recorded the No. 3 time in collegiate history in the 100m dash prelims at 10.81 seconds. The time also broke Carlette Guidry's 31-year program record.
