Men’s Tennis’ Ciamarra and Harper advance to NCAA Doubles Quarterfinals
05.25.2022 | Men's Tennis
Richard Ciamarra and Cleeve Harper secured a straight-sets win over No. 32 Justin Barki and Ryan Seggerman of Princeton on Wednesday.
Champaign, Ill. – Texas Men's Tennis' fourth-seeded doubles pair of senior Richard Ciamarra and sophomore Cleeve Harper advanced to the NCAA Doubles Tournament Quarterfinals with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over No. 32 Justin Barki and Ryan Seggerman of Princeton on Wednesday in Champaign, Ill.
The win makes Ciamarra and Harper the first Longhorns duo to reach the men's NCAA quarterfinals since 2015 when Lloyd Glasspool and Søren Hess-Olesen won the Doubles National Championship.
It also sets up a rematch for Ciamarra and Harper with 5-8 seed No. 5 Sam Riffice and Ben Shelton of Florida on Thursday. The pairs met in dual match play in February at the ITA Indoors when the Longhorns duo clinched the doubles point against the Gators with a 6-4 win as Texas defeated Florida overall, 4-3. That match will take place at 3 p.m. CT on Thursday.
Against Princeton, the Texas tandem served first and later broke first for a 3-1 lead that they consolidated to 4-1 on serve. That was the beginning of the last five games of the first set staying on serve to the Longhorns' win with the teams exchanging deuce-point holds at 5-2 for Texas and 5-3 for Princeton.
The second set also stayed on serve for the first seven games, and once again, the teams swapped deuce-point holds at 3-2 for the Tigers and 3-3 for the Longhorns to finish that stretch. However, after that, Ciamarra and Harper picked up the break they needed for a 4-3 lead, which they extended to 5-3 with a hold, and the last two games stayed on serve to the UT victory.
