AUSTIN, Texas — Graduate guard Marcus Carr recorded a team-high 20 points to lead No. 10/10 Texas (15-2, 4-1 Big 12) to a 72-70 victory against Texas Tech (10-7, 0-5 Big 12) on Saturday night at Moody Center. For the second-straight contest, the Longhorns rallied from a double-digit deficit in the second half.
UT improved to 8-1 under the leadership of Interim Head Coach Rodney Terry. Texas' 15-2 start to the season is its best 17-game start to a year since the 2009-10 team opened the season with 17-consecutive wins.
Carr had 15 of his 20 points in the second half and tied his season high with six rebounds to go along with three assists in 33 minutes. Graduate Sir'Jabari Rice posted 15 of his 18 points (8-10 FT) in the second half and added four assists, two blocks and two steals in 29 minutes. Super senior Timmy Allen recorded 17 points while converting 6-of-9 field goals and 5-of-6 free throws in 29 minutes, and senior Dylan Disu tied his career high with five blocks in 19 minutes.
The Red Raiders jumped out to a 7-2 lead following a Fardaws Aimaq layup at the 16:01 mark. An Allen jumper trimmed the margin to 19-17 with 6:05 remaining, but Texas Tech responded with a 10-1 spurt over the next four minutes to build a 29-18 advantage after a pair of free throws from Kevin Obanor. The Red Raiders increased their lead to as much as 12 points (34-22) following a Pop Isaacs three-pointer at the 1:12 mark, before the Longhorns scored the final three points of the half to cut the gap to 34-25 at the break.
In UT's most recent game against TCU on Wednesday (Jan. 11), the Longhorns erased a 12-point deficit (61-49) with 9:36 remaining. During Saturday's contest against the Red Raiders, Texas Tech grabbed a 10-point advantage (40-30) following a De'Vion Harmon free throw with 16:57 left. UT used an 8-0 run over the next two minutes to trim the margin to 40-38 after a Carr free throw at the 14:38 mark.
The Red Raiders took a 44-41 lead following a Jaylon Tyson jumper with 13:19 remaining. Texas went on a 9-0 run over the next three minutes to grab a 50-44 advantage after an Arterio Morris layup at the 10:31 mark. UT increased its cushion to 53-46 following a Carr three-pointer with 9:17 left, before Texas Tech scored seven-straight points to even the score at 53-53 after a pair of Isaacs free throws at the 7:33 mark.
A Rice three-pointer with 5:07 left gave the Longhorns the lead for good (56-53). Texas increased its cushion to 66-60 following an Allen three-point play with 46 seconds remaining, and UT converted 6-of-8 free throws in the final 20 seconds to seal the win.
Texas is back in action on Tuesday, Jan. 17 when it travels to face No. 14/14 Iowa State. Tip is set for 7 p.m. Central at Hilton Coliseum, and the game will be streamed nationally by Big 12 Now/ESPN+.
