IRVING, Texas — University of Texas graduate guard Marcus Carr has been named the Phillips 66 Big 12 Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday. This marks Carr's second career weekly league honor, as he claimed his first accolade earlier this season on Dec. 19.
Carr paced the Longhorns to a pair of victories last week. He averaged 27.0 points, 3.0 assists and 3.0 steals in 32.5 minutes per game. Carr converted 54.8-percent (17-31) from the floor, including 66.7-percent (12-18) from three-point range, and 88.9-percent (8-9) from the free throw line while posting six assists against just two turnovers.
During Tuesday's home win against Texas A&M-Commerce (Dec. 28), Carr registered 41 points while hitting 13-of-19 field goals, including 10-of-15 threes, and 5-of-6 free throws, while adding four assists against one turnover and two steals in 30 minutes. He tied the school record for most three-point field goals made in a game, equaling the mark of 10 set by Al Coleman vs. K-State on Jan. 12, 1997. This marked the first 40-point performance by a Texas player since Reggie Freeman scored 43 in a home win against Fresno State on Dec. 14, 1996. Carr tied his collegiate career high in scoring. He also had 41 while playing for Minnesota at Nebraska on Feb. 27, 2021. Carr set career highs in field goals made and three-point field goals made.
He also tied the school record for most points scored in a half (33) in the first half. Jim Krivacs had 33 in the second half vs. Northern Montana on Nov. 27, 1978. Carr set the school record for most points scored in a FIRST half. The previous mark was 29 by B.J. Tyler in the first half at Baylor on Jan. 19, 1994. Carr set the school record for most three-pointers made in a HALF with eight in the first half. The old mark was six, which was done seven time previously. Carr registered 33 points (11-15 FG, 8-11 threes, 3-4 FT) in 18 minutes of action during the first half. His 41 points tied for the eighth-highest single-game scoring total in UT history (record is 49, twice). The 41 points also tied for the fourth-highest single-game scoring total in a HOME game in UT history.
In Saturday's 70-69 win at Oklahoma (Dec. 31), Carr recorded a team-high 13 points while hitting 2-of-3 three-pointers and 3-of-3 free throws, two assists and tied his career high with four steals in 36 minutes. His turnaround jumper in the lane with 48 seconds left gave the Longhorns the lead for good, and he sealed the victory by hitting a pair of free throws with three seconds remaining.
Through the first 13 games, Carr leads the Longhorns in scoring (17.5 ppg), steals (26) and minutes (30.0 mpg) and ranks second in assists (53). He has posted an impressive 3.12 assist-to-turnover ratio (53-17) and has converted 46.3-percent (75-162) from the field, including a 45.5-percent (35-77) mark from three-point range.
No. 6/6 Texas (12-1, 1-0 Big 12) returns to action at home against K-State (12-1, 1-0 Big 12) on Tuesday, Jan. 3. Tip is scheduled for 8 p.m. Central at Moody Center, and the contest will be televised nationally by Longhorn Network.
