Women’s Basketball tops 2023-24 Big 12 Preseason Poll

The Longhorns are coming off the 2023 Big 12 regular season championship.
AUSTIN, Texas — Coming off the 2023 Big 12 regular season championship, The University of Texas Women's Basketball team has been selected the preseason favorite by the league's coaches.
The Longhorns earned 12 of 14 first-place votes and had 168 points total. Second was Baylor with two first-place votes and 148 points. Third was Kansas with 138 points. It is the fourth time the Longhorns have topped the preseason poll and the first time since the 2014-15 season.
Five Longhorns earned preseason awards on Wednesday including Rori Harmon the Preseason Player of the Year and Madison Booker the Preseason Freshman of the Year. Harmon and DeYona Gaston earned spots on the Preseason All-Big 12 Team. Shaylee Gonzales and Aaliyah Moore were selected Honorable Mention Preseason All-Big 12.
Texas went 26-10 in the 2022-23 season with a 14-4 mark in conference play. The regular season conference title was the first for Texas since the 2003-04 season and 13th overall regular season conference championship. The Longhorns won the conference tournament in 2022, their 10th conference tournament championship.
The Longhorns return 88 percent of their scoring and 94 percent of their rebounding from the 2022-23 team. Harmon was the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year and an All-American for the second straight season. DeYona Gaston was a First Team All-Big 12 selection. Shaylee Gonzales, who passed 2,000 career points was named the 2022 Big 12 Newcomer of the Year. Amina Muhammad earned a spot on the 2022 Big 12 All-Freshman Team.
