Micah Braswell claims singles title at ITA National Fall Championships
11.05.2023 | Men's Tennis
Senior Micah Braswell becomes the second Texas Men’s Tennis player to win singles title at ITA National Fall Championships, joining Yuya Ito.
San Diego – Texas Men's Tennis senior No. 17 Micah Braswell joined former Longhorn Yuya Ito (2019) as the only players in program history to win the singles title at the ITA National Fall Championships when he did so on Sunday in San Diego.
The 3 seed Braswell took down 5-8 seed No. 26 Jack Pinnington of TCU, 6-4, 6-4, winning the tournament without dropping a single set in any of his matches. In the first, both players held serve through the first six games with two of Braswell's reaching deuce, but both times he was able to hold for 2-2 and 3-3. With the score even at that point, Braswell claimed the only break of the set by either player, and then consolidated it for a 5-3 lead. Pinnington held serve in the next game, but Braswell was able to serve out the set, 6-4.
The second set started similarly with both players holding serve through the first four games, although the first three were swept by the servers with no points by the returners until the fourth finally went to a deuce point, which was won by Braswell to even the score, 2-2. Each player then went on to break the next five games, with Braswell starting the streak with deuce-point win in the fifth game. Leading, 4-3, he came close to holding with a 40-15 advantage, but Pinnington came back with three-straight points to even it again. However, Braswell broke again in the next game to retake the lead and put himself in a position to serve for the match. It appeared as if Braswell might take the game quickly as he jumped out to a 40-0 lead, but Pinnington rallied again to reach deuce. This time, though, after an extended rally, Braswell closed the door and claimed the title.
Combined with Eliot Spizzirri's title in the ITA All-American Championships earlier this fall, it gave Texas the sweep of the two majors for just the second time in program history and for the first time by two different players. Yuya Ito previously won both tournaments in 2019. It also marked just the fourth time different players from the same school combined to win the two titles.
It was the second title for Braswell in the last two weeks after also winning at the ITA Texas Regional Championships.
