Terry named to Naismith Men’s Coach of the Year late season watch list

Rodney Terry has guided the Longhorns to a 13-5 mark, including three wins against AP Top 20 opponents.
ATLANTA — University of Texas Men's Basketball Interim Head Coach Rodney Terry has been named to the 2023 Werner Ladder Naismith Men's College Coach of the Year late season watch list, the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced Friday. Terry is one of 15 coaches named to the prestigious watch list.
Candidates not included can still make their way on to the 10 semifinalists list, which will be announced on Thursday, March 9. The Werner Ladder Naismith Men's College Coach of the Year award will be narrowed to four finalists on Monday, March 20.
The final round includes an opportunity for fans to participate through the Naismith Awards Fan Vote presented by Jersey Mike's, which accounts for 5% of the total vote and runs from March 21-28. The winner will be announced on Sunday, April 2 at the Naismith Awards Brunch presented by Frost Bank at the Final Four in Houston.
Terry was named Acting Head Coach at The University of Texas a few hours prior to the Dec. 12 home game against Rice. He was named Interim Head Coach for the remainder of the season on Jan. 5.
Since taking over on Dec. 12, Terry has guided the Longhorns to a 13-5 mark this season including three wins against AP Top 20 opponents (No. 17 TCU, No. 11 Baylor and at No. 7 K-State). Texas is 6-0 under Terry in games decided by five points or less or in overtime.
The Longhorns are off to a 20-6 start (9-4 in Big 12 Conference, tied for first) and currently stand at No. 9 in the NCAA's NET ranking and No. 9 in KenPom. The 20-6 record marks UT's best 26-game start since the 2010-11 season (23-3). The Longhorns are 9-6 in Quad 1 games this year, and the nine Quad 1 wins are tied for the second-most nationally with Purdue and Baylor.
No. 6/5 Texas (20-6, 9-4 Big 12) returns to action when it hosts Oklahoma (13-13, 3-10 Big 12) on Saturday, Feb. 18. Tip is scheduled for 1 p.m. Central at Moody Center, and the contest will be streamed nationally by Big 12 Now/ESPN+.
