Disu paces the Longhorns with a season-high 24 points while hitting 10-of-15 field goals.
WACO, Texas — Senior Dylan Disu recorded a season-high 24 points, but No. 8/8 Texas (22-7, 11-5 Big 12) dropped an 81-72 decision at No. 9/10 Baylor (21-8, 10-6 Big 12) on Saturday afternoon in the Ferrell Center. Disu paced five Longhorns in double-figure scoring on the afternoon.
Disu, who entered the game with a season high of 14 points, posted his Texas scoring high and was just five points shy of his collegiate career high of 29 against Kentucky on Feb. 17, 2021 when he played for Vanderbilt. Disu converted 10-of-15 field goals, including 3-of-4 from three-point range, and added four rebounds, two assists and two steals in 26 minutes. He tied his collegiate career high in field goals made and set his season high in three-point field goals made.
Sophomore Tyrese Hunter recorded 13 points while hitting 3-of-6 three-pointers, four assists and two steals in a season-high 37 minutes. Super senior Timmy Allen registered 12 points (5-8 FG) and a team-high nine rebounds along with three assists in 33 minutes, and graduate Sir'Jabari Rice posted 12 points while converting 2-of-5 threes in 23 minutes. Graduate Marcus Carr added 11 points, a game-high six assists against one turnover and five rebounds in 37 minutes.
A Jalen Bridges jumper gave the Bears a 4-2 advantage at the 17:56 mark, before the Longhorns used a 16-0 run over the next six-plus minutes to build an 18-4 cushion following a pair of Rice free throws with 11:32 remaining. A Disu jumper provided Texas a 23-11 lead at the 9:19 mark, but Baylor responded with an 18-0 spurt over the next eight minutes to take a 29-23 advantage after a Bridges follow-dunk with 1:12 left. Disu, who tied his season high with 14 points in the first half, scored the last four points of the half in the final minute to help the Longhorns trim the margin to 29-27 at the break.
A Disu layup closed the deficit to 34-33 at the 17:17 mark, but the Bears answered with a 7-0 run to build a 41-33 cushion after a pair of Flo Thamba free throws with 16:31 left. A Carr jumper pulled the Longhorns to within 50-42 at the 14:02 mark, before Baylor went on a 10-1 spurt to increase its advantage to 60-43 following a Dale Bonner three-pointer with 10:55 remaining.
A pair of Bonner free throws gave the Bears a 70-53 cushion at the 4:28 mark. The Longhorns pulled to within seven points (77-70) after a Carr three-pointer with 32 seconds left, but that was as close as Texas could get the rest of the way.
Texas is back in action on Wednesday, March 1 when it travels to face No. 24/RV TCU. Tip is set for 8 p.m. Central at Schollmaier Arena, and the game will be televised nationally by ESPN2.
