MANHATTAN, Kan. — Graduate guard Sir'Jabari Rice recorded a double-double with 14 points and a season-high 10 boards, while super senior forward Christian Bishop added 14 points to lead No. 10/9 Texas (19-4, 8-2 Big 12) to a 69-66 victory at No. 10/9 Kansas State (18-5, 6-4 Big 12) on Saturday afternoon at Bramlage Coliseum. UT improved to 12-3 under the leadership of Interim Head Coach Rodney Terry, including a 6-0 mark in games decided by five points or less or in overtime.
This marked UT's first true road win against an AP Top 10 opponent since the Longhorns won 84-59 at No. 3 Kansas on Jan. 2, 2021. It also marked the fifth straight year that Texas had won in Manhattan, dating back to the 2018-19 season.
Five UT players reached double figures in scoring during the victory. Rice tallied his first double-double as a Longhorn and the fifth in his collegiate career. He converted 2-of-4 from three-point range and tied a season high by hitting 8-of-9 free throws in just 18 minutes. His 10 rebounds were two shy of his collegiate high of 12, set while he was at New Mexico State against Grand Canyon on Jan. 29, 2022.
Bishop converted 6-of-11 field goals and 2-of-3 free throws while adding six rebounds (five offensive), two blocks and two steals in a season-high 26 minutes. Super senior Marcus Carr recorded 10 points (4-10 FG, 2-2 FT) and four assists against just one turnover in 39 minutes. Sophomore Tyrese Hunter registered all 10 of his points in the second half (4-8 FG) to go along with two rebounds and one steal in 35 minutes, and super senior Timmy Allen tallied 10 points (6-8 FT), four assists, three rebounds, two steals and one block in 31 minutes.
The opening four minutes saw three lead changes and one tie, as a Carr jumper gave the Longhorns a 7-6 advantage with 16:39 remaining. The Wildcats responded with a 6-0 spurt to take a 12-7 lead following an Abayomi Iyiola layup at the 13:24 mark.
A Brock Cunningham three-pointer trimmed the margin to 20-14 at the 8:24 mark, but K-State used an 8-0 run to increase its cushion to 28-14 after a Keyontae Johnson layup with 6:19 left. The Wildcats grabbed a 36-22 lead following a pair of Nae'qwan Tomlin free throws with 30 seconds remaining, before Rice knocked down three free throws with 0.4 seconds left to cut the gap to 36-25 at the break.
Texas opened the second half on a 14-4 run over the first five minutes to trim the margin to a single point (40-39) after a pair of Carr free throws at the 15:04 mark. The Longhorns took their first lead (46-45) since early in the first half on a Bishop three-point play with 12:05 remaining.
Texas increased its cushion to 58-52 on a Bishop dunk at the 7:32 mark. The Wildcats chipped away at the deficit and evened the game at 64-64 after a Markquis Nowell jumper with 3:08 left. Another Nowell jumper gave K-State a 66-65 advantage at the 1:01 mark. Texas used a Bishop layup with 37 seconds left and a pair of Rice free throws with nine seconds remaining to take a 69-66 lead, and Ismael Massoud missed a game-tying three-pointer with one second remaining to seal the victory for the Longhorns.
Texas is back in action on Monday, Feb. 6 when it travels to face No. 8/8 Kansas. Tip is set for 8 p.m. Central at Allen Fieldhouse, and the game will be televised nationally by ESPN.
