Graduate guard leads the team in scoring, assists, steals and minutes.
BOSTON — University of Texas graduate guard Marcus Carr has been named a finalist for the 2023 Lute Olson National Player of the Year Award, College Insider announced this week. Carr is one of 25 finalists for the award presented annually to the nation's top Division I player. The recipient of the 2023 award will be announced in March in Houston, site of the NCAA Men's Final Four.
The award is named in honor of Hall of Fame coach Lute Olson who won 776 games in 34 seasons as a head coach, including 24 at the University of Arizona. During his time at Arizona, he led the Wildcats to 11 Pac-10 Conference titles, 23 consecutive NCAA Tournaments, four Final Four appearances and a National Championship in 1997. In 2002, Olson was enshrined into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
Carr claimed All-Big 12 First Team honors, becoming the first UT player to receive first-team All-Big 12 accolades since Isaiah Taylor in 2015-16. He leads the Longhorns in scoring (16.1 ppg), assists (132), steals (55) and minutes (33.4 mpg).
Carr has posted an impressive 2.75 assist-to-turnover ratio (132-48) and has converted 43.1-percent (174-404) from the floor, including a 36.2-percent (71-196) mark from three-point range, and 77.9-percent (95-122) from the free throw line. He has topped the 20-point mark a total of six times in Big 12 Conference play (18 games) and eight times this season (32) and has posted at least 27 points in a game four times this season. Over the last eight contests, Carr has recorded 37 assists against just six turnovers.
Carr topped the 2,000-point mark in his collegiate career earlier this season, and he now has posted 2,261 points in 158 career games (14.3 ppg). He is the ONLY active NCAA Division I player to boast at least 2,200 points (2,2261), 700 assists (726) AND 500 rebounds (532). His 2,261 points rank No. 9 on the NCAA Division I active players list (through games of Mar. 9), while his 726 assists rank No. 4 on the NCAA Division I active players list.
No. 7/7 Texas (24-8, 12-6 Big 12) returns to action when it faces No. 22/23 TCU later tonight in the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship semifinals. Tip is scheduled for approximately 8:30 p.m. Central at T-Mobile Center, and the contest will be televised nationally by ESPN.
