No. 11/9 Softball’s pitching staff shuts out Sam Houston
03.14.2023 | Softball
In first of six straight away from Austin, Reese Atwood continues her strong productivity on the road
HUNTSVILLE, TX – No matter if it was beside or behind home plate, Reese Atwood had her fingerprints all over Texas' 4-0 victory at Sam Houston Tuesday night.
While standing at the plate with a bat, Atwood turned in her second career three-hit game. She got Texas into the hit column in the top of the second inning when she singled back to the left-centerfield gap. After advancing to second on a Baylea Brandon, Atwood scored the first run of the game when she touched home plate with her cleats following a two-out single off the bat of Ashton Maloney.
Atwood extended the Longhorn lead two innings later when she led off the top of the fourth with a solo home run.
While wearing the catcher's gear behind the dish Tuesday evening, Atwood caught four innings of scoreless softball from Mac Morgan (8-1), before she gave way to Sophia Simpson, who struck out three over two innings. Citlaly Gutierrez struck out two of the final three Bearkat batters to cap the night.
On the night, with Atwood behind the dish, the trio of Longhorn pitchers struck out eight batters, scattered four hits — all singles — and issued only three walks.
FROM HEAD COACH MIKE WHITE
"It was really nice to see the bottom of the lineup get going tonight. You need different people to step up when others are struggling. You can't expect people to hit .500 or .400 all season long. I'd like that, but we just have to roll with what's happening."
FROM FRESHMAN REESE ATWOOD
"I just tried to stay loose and wanted to focus on what I've been working on throughout the last few weeks. It felt really good to be able to bounce back after last weekend and coming off a little bit of a slump and come back and start off the week really good."
