04.02.2023 | Rowing
The Longhorns won all eight races during the two-day regatta in San Diego.
SAN DIEGO – No. 1 Rowing closed out a successful weekend in California with a sweep of four grand finals races at the San Diego Crew Classic on Sunday on the Fiesta Bay-Crown Point Shores of Mission Bay Park.
Racing against many of the West Coast's top-ranked programs, including No. 2 Stanford, No. 5 Washington, No. 7 California and No. 16 USC, the Longhorns completed a weekend sweep in San Diego for the second consecutive year.
"We had a great day, and everyone performed at an absolutely high level," said Texas head coach Dave O'Neill. "I was really impressed with how each boat stepped up when challenged, and this was a terrific way to start the season. Of course, as fun and impressive it may have been, it was not a dominant performance. We know there's a lot of work to do in the weeks ahead, and everyone is motivated for what's ahead."
The Horns opened the finals session with victory in the I Eight, winning the Jessop-Whittier Cup Invitational with a time of 6:29.985 to top runner-up Stanford (6:31.850) by almost two seconds with Rowing Canada (6:34.694) placing third.
The Longhorn First Eight has win 21 consecutive races with a head-to-head record of 76-0 since the streak began at the start of the 2021 season.
Texas' Four followed with a second-straight title in the Karen Plumleigh Cortney Cup in dominating fashion, crossing the line in 7:24.910 to defeat runner-up Stanford (7:32.485) by 7.575 seconds. Washington (7:34.010) took third, narrowly defeating California (7:34.029).
In the next race, UT added a II Eight victory for the Jackie Ann Stitt Hungness Trophy, winning with a time of 6:40.005, followed Stanford (6:42.005), California (6:47.423) and Washington (6:47.924).
UT closed out the sweep with a III Eight victory in the Carley Copley Cup, posting a time of 6:53.030 to once again top runner-up Stanford (6:55.960) with California (6:58.473) placing third.
Next up, the Longhorns will host No. 9 Michigan on Lady Bird Lake on Saturday, April 15.
