AUSTIN, TX – Leighann Goode's freshman year as a member of The University of Texas softball program was filled with countless "firsts." And the San Antonio native added another this week by becoming the first D1Softball Freshman All-American in program history when the publication announced its All-American teams Tuesday morning.
Goode became the first Texas freshman softball student-athlete to earn All-American status — regardless of team, publication or affiliation — since Shea O'Leary was named an honorable mention All-American by Softball America following the 2019 season.
In 203 official plate appearances throughout 61 games on the season, Goode slashed .325/.392/.552 with 66 hits, 52 runs, 41 RBI, 16 doubles, eight home runs and three triples. She drew 21 base on balls, successfully stole 10 bases and was hit by two pitches.
Defensively, Goode helped turn 14 double plays and finished with a .986 fielding percentage after starting at least one game at six different positions.
On the season, Goode finished with 18 multiple hit games and 10 multiple RBI games, while starting in all 61 games throughout the 2023 season. She also became her Longhorn softball career with a program-record 10-game hitting streak, surpassing Janae Jefferson who held the previous mark with an eight-game streak. The San Antonio native was credited with 19 hits throughout her first 10 collegiate softball games, marking the most hits by a Texas softball freshman under fifth-year head coach Mike White.
Goode, who was named to the 2023 TUCCI/NFCA Division I National Freshman of the Year Top 25 List, also set the program's single-game record with five runs scored in a single game during Texas' 22-0 win over Texas Southern in five innings on Sunday, Feb. 26, 2023.
Goode was joined by Oklahoma State's Tallen Edwards and Texas Tech's Kailey Wyckoff as the only Big 12 Conference representatives on the All-American Freshman team. The 2023 season marked the publication's inaugural All-American Freshman team as D1Softball.
