NEW YORK — Texas Men's Tennis senior Eliot Spizzirri is one of nine individuals to receive a qualifying wild card for the men's singles draw at the U.S. Open, the tournament announced Wednesday. The U.S. Open qualifying tournament will be held from Aug. 22-25, and the main draw is scheduled for Aug. 28 through Sept. 10.
It marks the second time in his career Spizzirri has received a wild card to the tournament, also doing so in 2021 when he advanced to the second round of qualifying. He then was also granted a wild card to the doubles main draw with partner Tyler Zink. The following year, Spizzirri was recovering from injury during the time of the U.S. Open.
After leading Texas to its third NCAA Final Four appearance in the last four years and being named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Player of the Year, Spizzirri was chosen as one of just five men's players selected to the 2023 USTA Collegiate Summer Team, playing several events on the ATP Challenger Tour, including winning the doubles title of the tournament in Lexington, Ky.
He was an ITA All-American in both singles and doubles for the fourth and fifth All-America honors of his career with two in singles and three-straight in doubles, and it marked the second time he has earned them in both in the same year after doing so in 2021. He and partner junior Cleeve Harper finished ranked No. 2 in doubles, coming off their runner-up finish in the NCAA Doubles Championships.
Draws and match schedules for the U.S. Open qualifying tournament will be announced at a later date.
