Davis-Woodhall wins silver medal off first round jump
BUDAPEST – Tara Davis-Woodhall won the silver medal representing USA at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in the long jump off her first round jump of 6.91-meters.
Davis-Woodhall's second-place finish is the best ever finish by a male or female Longhorn jumper (long jump, high jump or triple jumper) at the Olympic or World Championships since Marquise Goodwin won silver at the 2015 Pan American Games.
Davis-Woodhall took the lead off her very first jump of 6.91m, but fell to second after Ivana Vuleta's second attempt of 7.05m. Vuleta of Serbia later won on her fifth attempt with a world-leading jump of 7.14m.
2023 NCAA long jump outdoor champion Ackelia Smith of Jamaica finished 11th with her second round effort of 6.49m.
On the track, Julien Alfred continued her dominant season in the 100-meter dash winning Heat 1 with her time of 10.99. The St. Lucian's time was the third-fastest time of the day behind Sha'Carri Richardson of USA's time of 10.92 and Ewa Swoboda of Poland's time of 10.98.
The 100-meter semifinals are scheduled for Monday at 1:35 p.m. CT. Alfred is scheduled to run in Heat 3 and will run in lane 5.
Ireland's Rhasidat Adeleke took Heat 5 comfortably with her time of 50.80. She was the lone competitor in her heat to run under 51 seconds. Adeleke, the 2023 NCAA outdoor 400m champion, will run in Heat 1 of the semis at 2:12 p.m. in lane 5.
Jonathan Jones completed his season in the men's 400-meter finishing seventh in his heat with a time of 46.03 for Barbados.
Elena Bruckner reached her first major championships event representing USA in the women's discus and finished with a throw of 55.94m.
