Adeleke reaches first major championships final at the World Athletics Championships
BUDAPEST – In her first ever major championships meet, Rhasidat Adeleke finished just off the podium in the 400-meter dash.
Fresh off her NCAA Outdoor 400m title, Adeleke competed for Ireland at the 2023 World Athletics Championships and reached the final in her first major competition of her pro career. She began the week winning Heat 5 of the qualification round with her time of 50.80 – the ninth-fastest time of the day.
She went on to run the second-fastest time in Heat 1 at 49.87 – the fourth fastest overall time in the semifinals to secure her spot in the final. It was the sixth time this season Adeleke ran a sub-50 second 400m dash.
The finals saw Adeleke just miss the podium for Ireland finishing fourth with her time of 50.13.
Adeleke broke the Texas program record two times in her final season as a Longhorn, with her personal best time coming during the NCAA finals at 49.20.
