Leo Neugebauer returns to Watch List after being a 2023 finalist.
AUSTIN, Texas - Senior Leo Neugebauer of the men's track and field team was named to the Bowerman Preseason Watch List as announced by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Wednesday afternoon.
Neugebauer was a 2023 finalist for the award after a record-setting 2022-23 season where he grabbed his first NCAA title in the decathlon scoring a NCAA record 8,836 points. His score broke not only the NCAA record, but the NCAA Outdoor Championships record, school record and the 39-year German National Record. The score ranks as the eighth-best performance in world history.
The six-time All-American now owns both the pentathlon and the heptathlon Texas records, surpassing the Olympic great Trey Hardee. Neugebauer won the bronze medal at the NCAA Indoor Championships with a program-record performance of 6,214 points. Prior to breaking the decathlon record in June, he defended his Texas Relays title with the then-No. 5 performance in NCAA history with 8,478 points.
His accolades didn't go unnoticed after he was tabbed with the USTFCCCA Male Field Performer of the Year and later the only male finalist for the Bowerman in Longhorns history.
