Texas takes Saturday doubleheader against St. Edward’s, McLennan
AUSTIN, Texas – Over the course of Saturday's doubleheader against St. Edward's and McLennan, The University of Texas softball program outscored its two opponents by nearly 30 runs after the Longhorns beat the Rams, 5-1, and the Hilltoppers, 26-1.
"I think getting more people more at bats and just being able to play (a game against) someone other than ourselves (were the biggest takeaway from today's games), said Texas softball head coach Mike White. "I thought Teagan Kavan looked in command the whole day and so did Citlaly (Gutierrez).
"We got off to a little bit of a slow start, but that's to be expected during the first time out. But Mac Morgan helped us settle in with her get start, before we got a little shaky during the middle innings. Cambria Salmon got her first appearance for us today, too, and did a good job. We had several people contribute for us today, including Reese Atwood who had a magical day. The second game was a pretty good display of offensive abilities from the team."
Against St. Edward's to start the day, the two teams traded zeroes in the run column in the first inning before Leighann Goode connected for a two-run home run during the second. The Longhorn lead was extended an inning later when Atwood doubled home from Viviana Martinez. Meanwhile, Morgan limited the Rams to just two baserunners — one walk, one hit (a single) — over three innings of work.
The Rams plated its lone run in the top of the fourth inning on a two-out single that scored a runner from second. However, the Longhorns added two more in the fifth as Adayah Wallace and Joley Mitchell both came around to touch home plate, before Salmon worked the final three innings without allowing anymore runs to St. Edward's.
Similar to the first game, Texas and McLennan both failed to score in the game's first inning. But it was just one of the two scoreless innings by the Longhorns against the Hilltoppers after UT scored in the second, third, fourth and sixth innings.
In the second inning, Texas busted into the run column with a seven-run, seven-hit frame that was highlighted by a one-out, two-run home run off the bat of Reese Atwood. The Longhorns followed with an eighth-run, six-hit third that featured a two-run home run by Kayden Henry. In the fourth, freshman Lien Brister hit a two-out grand slam to cap a nine-run frame. UT capped its scoring with a two-out, two-run home run by Katie Cimusz in the bottom of the sixth.
