Tre Johnson paces five Longhorns in double-figure scoring with a game-high 19 points.
AUSTIN, Texas — Freshman guard Tre Johnson registered a game-high 19 points to lead Texas (2-1) to a 105-58 victory over Chicago State (0-3) on Tuesday night in Moody Center. The 47-point win marked the second-largest margin of victory recorded by the Longhorns in the three-year history of Moody Center, just shy of the record 51-point win (82-31) over Houston Christian on Nov. 10, 2022.
Johnson, who led five Longhorns in double-figure scoring on the night, converted 6-of-9 field goals, including 4-of-6 threes, and 3-of-3 free throws in 22 minutes. Senior Ze'Rik Onyema posted his Texas high and was just one shy of his collegiate career high with 18 points (7-8 FG, 4-4 FT) and six boards in 21 minutes, while senior Arthur Kaluma recorded 15 points (5-8 FG), eight rebounds and four assists without a turnover in 21 minutes.
Graduate Kadin Shedrick posted 12 points (3-5 FG, 6-9 FT) in 19 minutes, and graduate Julian Larry added 10 points (4-8 FG, 2-2 FT) and four assists in 24 minutes. Junior Chendall Weaver registered a game-high nine rebounds, one shy of his collegiate career high, to go along with seven points and four assists in 18 minutes.
Texas improved to 104-10 all-time when topping the 100-point mark, including a 69-2 record in home games. The Longhorns converted 57.1-percent (36-63) from the floor, including a 50-percent mark (9-18) from three-point range, and recorded 21 assists against just nine turnovers. Texas limited Chicago State to 58 points on 29.7-percent (19-64) from the field.
Texas scored the game's first 12 points to take a 12-0 advantage following a Johnson jumper at the 16:28 mark. The Cougars trimmed the margin to 12-4 after a Jalen Forrest layup with 15:32 remaining, but that marked the only time Chicago State trailed by single digits. The Longhorns answered with a 12-0 run over the next five minutes to build a 24-4 cushion following a Kaluma dunk at the 10:25 mark.
After a Gabe Spinelli layup cut the deficit to 34-11 with 7:07 left, Texas went on a 13-0 run over the next three minutes to increase its advantage to 47-11 following a Johnson three-pointer at the 4:11 mark. UT limited the Cougars to 29.7-percent (19-64) in the opening 20 minutes and took a 50-18 lead into the break.
A Troy McKoy Jr. three-pointer trimmed the deficit to 64-29 with 14:53 remaining, before the Longhorns went on a 20-2 run over the next four-and-a-half minutes to build an 84-31 cushion following an Onyema put-back dunk at the 10:12 mark. The margin did not dip below 45 points for the remainder of the contest. Texas converted 62.1-percent (18-29) from the floor, including a 5-of-8 mark from three-point range, in the final 20 minutes.
Texas returns to action when it hosts Mississippi Valley State on Saturday, Nov. 16. Tip is scheduled for 4 p.m. CT in Moody Center, and SEC Network+ will stream the contest.
