Track and Field opens indoor season at Louisville Opener

Longhorns win nine events in Kentucky.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Texas track and field program opened its indoor season at the Louisville Opener against Louisville and Kentucky on Wednesday at the Norton Healthcare Sports & Learning Center. The Longhorn won nine events to begin the season.
The Longhorns swept the 500-meter after sophomore Akala Garrett took first place with her time of 1:10.40. She moved to No. 24 on the USTFCCCA All-Time performer list with the win. Texas Ex Kennedy Simon still sits at No. 3 on the all-time performer list with her time of 1:08.59 set in 2022. On the men's side, Chris Brinkley Jr., took first in 1:03.08.
Freshman Sydni Wilkins continued her strong season by winning the 5000-meter in her first indoor collegiate meet of her career. Wilkins' winning time of 16:36.62 was 29 seconds in front of second.
Sophomore Evan MacGregor claimed the 1,000-meter with his time of 2:27.16, while fellow sophomore Jack Boyd finished second in 2:30.11.
Senior Kenondra Davis led a group of Longhorns with a winning time in the 300-meter with a personal-best time of 37.53. Sophomore Lauren Lewis was third with her personal-best time of 38.43. Sophomores Carleta Bernard (38.93) and Micayah Holland (39.16) finished fifth and sixth, respectively. Aaliyah Foster, Longhorn jumper, was 12th in 40.87.
Logan Popelka led the men in the 300m with his winning time of 32.54. Not only was it a personal best time but also ranks as No. 12 on the USTFCCCA All-Time performer list. John Rutledge tied for third with his time of 33.33 – another personal best time. Kendrick Smallwood was the final competitor to finish in the top-10 with a time of 34.42 to finish eighth.
Freshman Luis Pastor (4:09.10) and sophomore Zain Hamdani (4:11.74) claimed the top-two finishes in the men's mile. Hamdani's time also marked a personal best.
The women's 4x400 relay of Davis, Garrett, Bernard and Lewis combined to win with a time of 3:38.46. The men of Damon Frabotta, Elijah Mosley, Popelka and Rutledge combined to win the men's relay in 3:09.85.
