Abmas records 13 of his game-high 21 points in the final 3:27 to seal the important road victory on Saturday.
FORT WORTH, Texas — Graduate guard Max Abmas posted 13 of his game-high 21 points in the final 3:27 to lift Texas (15-7, 4-5 Big 12) to a 77-66 victory at No. 25/25 TCU (16-6, 5-4 Big 12) on Saturday afternoon at Schollmaier Arena. Texas coach Rodney Terry recorded his 200th career victory as a collegiate head coach with the win.
Abmas converted 3-of-3 field goals, including 2-of-2 from three-point range, and 5-of-5 free throws over the late stretch to help the Longhorns close out the game on a 13-2 run. On the afternoon, he hit 6-of-14 field goals, including 2-of-5 threes, and 7-of-7 free throws in 32 minutes. Abmas moved into the No. 13 spot (passed Danny Manning of Kansas at 2,951) on the NCAA all-time Division I career scoring list with 2,955 points in 145 games.
Graduate forward Dylan Disu posted 15 points (5-11 FG, 2-3 threes, 3-3 FT), seven rebounds, two assists, two blocks and two steals in 26 minutes, and sophomore forward Dillon Mitchell tallied his eighth double-double of the season with 13 points (6-9 FG) and 11 rebounds in 35 minutes. The Longhorns registered a plus-13 (34-21) rebound margin, including a 14-7 margin on the offensive glass, and posted a 17-5 advantage in second-chance points.
TCU scored the game's opening seven points and jumped out to a 16-6 advantage following a Xavier Cork layup at the 13:51 mark. The Horned Frogs built a 19-10 cushion after a Trevian Tennyson three-pointer with 11:29 remaining, before Texas answered with a 10-4 spurt over the next two-plus minutes to trim the deficit to 23-20 following a Mitchell layup at the 9:10 mark.
TCU grabbed a 25-20 advantage after a Jakobe Coles jumper with 8:47 left, before the Longhorns used a 10-0 run over the next two minutes to take a 30-25 lead following a Disu three-pointer at the 6:48 mark. The Horned Frogs cut the gap to 35-32 after a Micah Peavy dunk with 2:42 remaining, before Texas closed the half on an 8-0 spurt to take a 43-32 lead at the break. The Longhorns converted 56.3-percent (18-32) from the floor, including a 4-of-5 (.800) mark from three-point range, in the opening 20 minutes.
TCU opened the second half with an 8-2 spurt over the first 2:27 to trim the deficit to 45-40 following an Emanuel Miller three-pointer at the 17:33 mark. A Disu layup gave the Longhorns a 54-48 cushion with 11:35 left, but the Horned Frogs scored seven straight points to take a 55-54 lead following a Jameer Nelson Jr. three-point play at the 8:58 mark.
TCU evened the score at 57-57 after a Miller layup with 8:06 remaining, before Texas responded with a 7-0 spurt over the next two-and-a-half minutes to build a 64-57 cushion following a Kadin Shedrick put-back dunk at the 5:20 mark. The Horned Frogs answered by scoring seven straight points to even the score at 64-64 after a pair of Miller free throws with 3:53 left.
That's when Abmas simply took over the game. He converted a three-point play at the 3:27 mark to spark the run, then followed with back-to-back three-pointers and hit a pair of free throws with 42 seconds left to push UT's advantage to 75-64. After a TCU dunk by Tennyson, Abmas added two more free throws to close out the scoring.
Texas is back in action when it hosts No. 12/11 Iowa State on Tuesday, Feb. 6. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m. Central at Moody Center, and the game will be televised nationally by Longhorn Network. The Longhorns will play a ranked opponent for the sixth-straight contest, when Iowa State visits Austin.
