Neugebauer and Smith earn recognition for NCAA-leading performances.
AUSTIN, Texas – No. 4/4 Texas Track and Field's Leo Neugebauer and Ackelia Smith earned Big 12 Performer of the Week honors for their NCAA-leading performances at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic.
Neugebauer was named Big 12 Male Athlete of the Week for his NCAA-leading score of 6,219 points in the heptathlon. The score ranks as the No. 5 score in NCAA history and ranks fifth in the world this season. Neugebauer's heptathlon was highlighted by his personal-best time of 6.96 in the 60-meter dash and NCAA-record throw of 16.77m (55-0.25) in the shot put as a multi.
Neugebauer's score also improved his previous Texas Longhorn program record he set last season at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Wednesday's award is the second time Neugebauer has been named the conference indoor performer of the week and third in his career.
Smith earned her first career Big 12 Female performer of the week honor after jumping out to a then-world leading long jump mark of 6.85m (22-5.75). The mark now ranks as the second-best mark in the world and ranks as the third-best in Texas history behind Tara Davis and her own mark from the NCAA Indoor Championships from last season. Smith joins Davis as the lone two Longhorns to ever jump over 22 feet multiple times in a singular indoor season.
