KANSAS CITY, Mo. — University of Texas graduate guard Max Abmas and graduate forward Dylan Disu have been selected to the 2023-24 National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) All-District 8 teams, the NABC announced Tuesday morning. Abmas was named to the five-person first team, while Disu was tabbed to the five-person second team.
District 8 of the NABC includes all 14 institutions in the Big 12 Conference. The NABC has 24 total districts in Division I, and an all-district first and second team for each district is selected by NABC-member head coaches.
Abmas is joined on the first team by Hunter Dickinson (Kansas), Tamin Lipsey (Iowa State), Kevin McCullar Jr. (Kansas) and Jamal Shead (Houston). Disu is joined on the second team by LJ Cryer (Houston), RayJ Dennis (Baylor), Pop Isaacs (Texas Tech) and Emanuel Miller (TCU).
Through the team's first 32 games, Abmas leads the team in scoring (17.1 ppg), assists (137, 4.28 apg) and minutes (35.1 mpg). He has hit 43.2-percent (186-431) from the floor, including a 36.8-percent (89-242) mark from three-point range, and 91.6-percent (87-95) from the free throw line. Abmas also sports a 1.90-to-1 (137-72) assist-to-turnover ratio. A three-time Big 12 Newcomer of the Week selection (Dec. 18, Jan. 15 and Feb. 5), he was previously named to the All-Big 12 Second Team (coaches) and Big 12 All-Newcomer Team (coaches) and to the All-Big 12 First Team (media).
In his first 23 games (18 starts) since returning from injury (left foot surgery which forced him to miss the first nine contests this season), Disu ranks second on the team in scoring (15.8 ppg) and rebounding (5.0 rpg), third in blocks (24) and fourth in minutes (25.4 mpg). He has converted 50.0-percent (39-78) from three-point range and 81.3-percent (65-80) from the free throw line. In Big 12 Conference play only, he ranked second in the league in scoring (17.2 ppg) while averaging 5.2 rpg and adding 26 steals and 19 blocks in 26.7 mpg. The Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week (Feb. 13) and Big 12 Player of the Week (Feb. 12), Disu was previously named the Big 12's Most Improved Player and earned All-Big 12 First Team accolades (coaches).
Texas (20-12, 9-9 Big 12) is the No. 7 seed in the Midwest Region in the upcoming 2024 NCAA Tournament. The Longhorns will face the winner of Tuesday's First Four contest between No. 10 seeds Colorado State and Virginia on Thursday, March 21. Tip time is set for 5:50 p.m. Central (6:50 p.m. Eastern) at Spectrum Center in Charlotte, N.C., and the game will be televised nationally by TNT.
