No. 2 Rowing’s I Eight named Big 12 Boat of the Week

The Longhorns earned the first league honor of the year following a standout performance at the San Diego Crew Classic.
IRVING, Texas – No. 2 Rowing's First Eight was selected the Big 12 Boat of the Week, the conference announced on Wednesday. The Longhorns earned the weekly conference honor after sweeping a pair of races at the San Diego Crew Classic on Saturday and Sunday.
The Texas I Eight featured senior coxswain Carly Legenzowski, as well as graduate student Mette Nielsen, graduate student, Lanie Nitsch, senior Anna Jensen, graduate student Etta Carpender, sophomore Marg Van der Wal, senior Parker Illingworth, fifth-year Cassandre Korvink-Kucinski and sophomore Abby Dawson.
Racing in the prestigious Jessop-Whittier Cup Invitational in a field that included Pac-12 powers Washington and California, the Texas I Eight won two races by an average of over four seconds.
On Saturday, the Longhorns kicked off the 2024 season with a victory in their Jessop-Whittier Cup heat, crossing the line in 6:27.626, just ahead of runner-up California in 6:28.817. Notre Dame placed third with a time of 6:46.854 and San Diego posted a time of 6:55.902 to finish fourth. Texas registered the fastest time of the morning and entered the final as the top seed.
In Sunday's final, the Texas I Eight collected the victory with a time of 6:23.272, winning by open water over California, who crossed the line in 6:30.093, with Washington placing third in 6:38.272.
Next up, Texas will travel north to race No. 9 Michigan on Belleville Lake on Saturday, April 13 at 8 a.m. CT.
