Carmen Herea, a native of Bucharest, Romania, who is one of the top juniors players in the world, will join the Longhorns’ roster in the fall of 2024.
Austin – University of Texas Women's Tennis has signed international standout Carmen Herea to a National Letter of Intent (NLI) and Athletic Scholarship Agreement (ASA), head coach Howard Joffe announced Wednesday.
Herea will enroll and join the program in the fall of 2024. She becomes part of a recruiting class that was already ranked No. 1 nationally by TennisRecruiting.net and includes fellow signees Ashton Bowers, Maya Joint and Ariana Anazagasty-Pursoo.
"Carmen's commitment to an already powerful class is an incredible addition to help the Longhorns be a force for the foreseeable future," Joffe said. "It is clear to me that Carmen is resourced in really special ways. She is incredibly intelligent, articulate, likeable, and of course, gifted as an athlete. I'm so grateful to Carmen and her parents for the trust they place in (assistant coach) Justin (Butsch) and me and in Texas. I intend to work alongside her with joy and determination to make sure she reaches her goals and surpasses them."
"I chose the University of Texas because it gets me a step closer to achieving my dream," Herea said. "Being a part of this program means so much to me. The team expects nothing but the best, and that's exactly what I want. With the incredible incoming freshman class and great returning players, I believe we're going to make history for the program. I can't wait to get there and show everyone what Texas Tennis means."
A native of Bucharest, Romania, Herea is one of the top juniors players in the world with a career high ranking of No. 82, while she is also currently ranked career highs of No. 885 in singles and No. 1135 in doubles by the WTA.
This past December, Herea reached the singles final of the W15 Heraklion in Greece, which was her second pro final after advancing to that stage at the W15 Kursumlijska Banja in Serbia in June of last year.
In juniors, Herea played in The Junior Championships at Wimbledon in 2023 and has also won two singles titles and six doubles championships. In singles, she won two tournaments in Romania, including the J3 Timisoara in 2022 and the J5 Bucharest in 2021. Meanwhile in doubles, she won the J1 Sanxenxo in Spain, J3 Timisoara, and J3 Loughborough in England in 2022, along with the J3 Haifa in Israel, and the J5 Targu Jiu and J4 Bistrita in Romania in 2021.
