Shelvin and Garrett lead No. 14/13 Track and Field at Mt. Sac Relays

Olivia Howell breaks 1500m school record.
WALNUT, Calif. – The No. 14/13 Texas track and field programs earned nine wins on Friday at the 64th annual Mt. Sac Relays. The Longhorns were led by freshman Akala Garrett and senior Nolton Shelvin who both ran away with two event wins each.
Garrett led the women after sweeping both hurdle events. Her winning-time of 55.93 in the 400-meter hurdles ranks as the fourth-fastest time in the NCAA this season and moved her to No. 8 on the UT All-Time Performer List. She also added her second personal best of the day in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.23.
On the men's side, Shelvin swept the short sprints events running a personal best in the 200-meter dash with a time of 20.47. The time moved him to No. 8 on the Texas All-Time Performer List. He also added a wind-aided time of 10.08 in the 100-meter dash to complete the sweep. Marcellus Moore finished fifth in both events with a time of 10.28w in the 100m and 20.96 in the 200m.
On the women's side, Kenondra Davis won the 200m with her time of 23.37, while freshman Dejanea Oakley was the runner-up with her time of 23.40. The Longhorns also posted three top-10 finishers in the 400-meter led by Ziyah Holman who was the runner-up with a time of 52.43. Freshman Lauren Lewis was fifth (53.32) and Oakley finished just behind in sixth at 53.50.
Grad transfer Caleb Cavanaugh led Texas to a 1-2-3 finish in the men's 400m hurdles and completed the Texas sweep with his time of 51.27. Sophomores Chris Brinkley and Kody Blackwood finished close behind with times of 51.58 and 51.67, respectively.
Texas closed the track events with two top-collegiate times in the 1500-meter elite races. Olivia Howell broke Valery Tobias' school record set one year ago with a time of 4:14.64 and finished fourth overall. On the men's side, Yusuf Bizimana also finished fourth overall with his time of 3:44.50.
Freshman Sophia Kowalski matched her personal best in the women's pole vault C division and cleared 3.90m (12-9.50) to take home the win.
Sophomore Jeremiah Nubbe won the men's discus with a heave of 58.78m (193-1) on his sixth and final throw, while senior Leo Neugebauer set a personal best of 58.70m (192-7) to finish second. Neugebauer's throw moved him to No. 9 on the UT All-Time performer list. Senior Patrick Piperi was sixth with a throw of 55.75m. Fellow freshman Michael Piñones was the runner-up in the men's shot put with a personal-best throw of 18.47m (60-7.25).
Junior Solomon Washington won the men's long jump with a wind-aided mark of 7.88m (25-10.25), while senior Jathan Belaire was sixth at 7.72mw.
