Men's Track and Field's Nubbe and Piperi qualify for NCAA Championships

Longhorns advance to 10 quarterfinals at the NCAA West Prelims.
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Jeremiah Nubbe and Patrick Piperi of the No. 7 men's track and field team earned spots at the NCAA Outdoor Championships Wednesday night at the John McDonnell Field on the first day of the NCAA West Prelims.
At regionals, the top-12 finishers qualify for the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore. Piperi was the first Longhorn to punch his ticket to the championships after he finished 10th in shot put with a heave of 18.74m (61-5.75) on his second throw. This marks the second-straight season Piperi has advanced to the championship.
Later, at 1 a.m., after being rescheduled from 9 a.m. Wednesday morning, Nubbe recorded the fourth-farthest throw of the competition at 70.99m (232-11). His first attempt throw ranks as the second-best in Texas history and Nubbe now holds the top-six throws in program history.
The Longhorns also advanced nine athletes to Friday's track quarterfinals led by Nolton Shelvin who advanced in both the 100-meter and the 200-meter. Shelvin won both of his heats giving him an automatic qualifying spot to the quarters running the second-fastest time in the 200m (20.42) and the seventh-fastest time in the 100m (10.23).
Marcellus Moore also advanced in the 100m with his time of 10.35. In the 200m, John Rutledge ran a season-best time of 20.54 for the seventh-fastest time of the night.
Logan Popelka ran the second-fastest 400-meter qualifying time at 45.25 for a personal best. His time is now tied for the No. 3 performer in UT history with Du'aine Ladejo and Brian Herron.
Yusus Bizimana led the 800-meter qualifiers with the fastest time clocked at 1:46.63. Cole Lindhorst recorded the fifth-fastest time at 1:47.82 to also advance to Friday.
The Longhorns later sent all three 400-meter hurdlers to the quarterfinals led by Caleb Cavanaugh who ran a personal-best time of 50.29. The time moved him to No. 10 on the UT All-Time performer list. Chris Brinkley also recorded a personal best with his time of 50.36 and Kody Blackwood finished in 50.61 for a season-best time.
