Women's Swimming's Gemmell places ninth in 200 free at Paris Olympics

PARIS, France — University of Texas rising sophomore Erin Gemmell registered a ninth-place finish in the 200-meter freestyle semifinals on Sunday evening at the Paris Olympic Games inside the Paris La Defense Arena. In addition, rising senior Anna Elendt of Germany finished 20th during the prelims of the 100-meter breaststroke.
During Sunday evening's 200-meter freestyle semifinals, Gemmell recorded the ninth-fastest time (1:56.46) to narrowly miss advancing to Monday night's final. Canada's Mary-Sophie Harvey tallied a mark of 1:56.37 to secure the eighth and final spot in the final, just 0.09 seconds in front of Gemmell. Ariarne Titmus of Australia posted the top time in the semifinals with a mark of 1:54.64.
In Sunday morning's prelims, Elendt registered a 20th-place result in the 100-meter breaststroke with a time of 1:07.00. Gemmell then advanced to the 200-meter freestyle semifinals as she recorded the 11th-fastest time of the heats with a mark of 1:57.23.
