Teagan Kavan becomes first student-athlete in program history to be selected as SEC Pitcher of the Week.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Softball fans weren't the only ones tuned into Teagan Kavan's performances throughout last weekend's Bevo Classic as the Southeastern Conference announced Monday afternoon that Texas' sophomore right-handed pitcher was named the SEC's Pitcher of the Week.
Monday's honor is the third time Kavan has been selected as a league's pitcher of the week after being named the Big 12's Pitcher of the Week on March 5th and March 26th as a freshman in the 2024 campaign.
In two starts against No. 11/8 Texas Tech on the Forty Acres over the weekend, Kavan limited the Red Raider offense to just one run and zero extra base hits in 13.0 innings of work against the nationally ranked foe. In Friday night's matchup against TTU, the sophomore outdueled the reigning USA Softball Player of the Year NiJaree Canady in the Longhorns' 2-1 nine-inning win, a win that saw Kavan strike out a career-high 18 batters and become the Longhorn pitcher to reach the strikeout mark since Cat Osterman against Arizona State on June 1, 2006. Her 18 strikeouts were also tied with former Oregon pitcher Cheridan Hawkins for the most by a pitcher in a single game under head coach Mike White.
Kavan's 18 strikeouts were the second most by a Division I pitcher in a single game this season after Ole Miss' Miali Guachino fanned 19 in a 10-inning loss at Southern Miss on Thursday, Feb. 13, 2025. Kavan's 18 strikeouts were the most by a pitcher against a Power 5 opponent since Auburn's Maddie Penta recorded 21 strikeouts in 12 innings against UCF on May 18, 2024.
After throwing a career-high 147 pitchers in her nine-inning complete game on Friday, Kavan rested during Texas' Saturday slate before returning to the circle on Sunday afternoon. Facing the same Red Raider lineup for the second time in three days, she struck out five more batters in just four innings of work, before Citlaly Gutierrez tossed the last frame before the game ended after the UT offense outscored TTU, 11-0, in five innings.
Over the course of her 13.0 innings of work against Texas Tech on the weekend, Kavan struck out multiple batters in the same inning on eight different occasions.
In five appearances in the pitching circle so far this season, Kavan is 4-0 with a 1.08 earned run average (ERA), 41 strikeouts in 26.0 innings of work – a 11.04 strikeout per seven innings average and a 1.58 strikeouts per inning mark – while limited opponents to just a .148 batting average. She's issued just five walks and allowed four runs. In her 13 hits scattered, only two have been for extra bases.
