Fort Worth – No. 11 Texas Women's Tennis earned a 6-1 road win at TCU in the team's final regular-season non-conference match on Thursday in Fort Worth.
The Longhorns took the doubles point with wins at Nos. 2 and 3 and followed with singles victories by freshman Charlotte Kempenaers-Pocz at No. 5, senior No. 87 Sabina Zeynalova at No. 1, freshmen No. 104 Ashton Bowers at No. 3 for the clinch, No. 25 Carmen Herea at No. 4, and Salma Drugdova at No. 6.
Kempenaers-Pocz made her dual match debut for Texas and was first off the court in both doubles and singles. In her singles match, Kempenaers-Pocz defeated Tomi Main, 6-1, 6-2, for a 2-0 overall lead following doubles. She sandwiched 3-0 runs around a hold from Main to take the first set. Main began the second set with a hold, but Kempenaers-Pocz responded with a 4-0 run and then closed with the last two games following one more hold from Main.
TCU then collected its lone win of the match as freshman No. 124 Eszter Meri fell to Raquel Caballero, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 2. With the match on serve and Caballero holding a 3-2 lead, she went on an 8-0 run to take the first set and establish a 4-0 lead in the second. The players then alternated games to the finish.
A short time later, Zeynalova downed Jade Otway, 6-1, 6-2, for a 3-1 overall lead. Zeynalova broke first for a 2-0 lead, and although Otway answered the break, Zeynalova set out on a 6-0 run to capture the first set and take a 2-0 lead in the second. Otway then held for 2-1, but Zeynalova took the next two games for 4-1 on the way to the 6-2 win.
Bowers then clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Isabel Pascual. Bowers pushed out to a 4-1 lead in the first set, which she maintained to the 6-3 win. After Pascual took the opening game of the second set, Bowers answered with the next two and later closed the match on a 4-0 run for the win.
The teams played out the two remaining matches with Herea finishing first with a 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (5) superbreaker win over Yu-Chin Tsai at No. 4. After the first three games were breaks, Herea held for a 3-1 lead. Although Tsai twice tied it at 3-3 and 4-4, Herea closed out the set with a break and a hold. In the second set, both players held starting with Tsai before she went on a 3-0 run for a 4-1 lead. Herea got one game back on a hold, but Tsai finished the last two games to go to a superbreaker. There, Herea took an early lead and never looked back on the way to a 10-5 win.
That left the match at No. 6, which had started later with only five courts available in the facility. In that contest, Drugdova completed the scoring in the overall match with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Maya Drozd. Drugdova controlled the first set by jumping out to a 5-0 lead. In the second, after both players held in their first service games, three straight breaks left Drugdova with a 3-2 lead and she consolidated the last of those for 4-2. The rest of the match was then on serve to the final.
Earlier in doubles, Kempenaers-Pocz and Zeynalova started it out with a 6-3 win over Main and Tsai at No. 2. The Longhorns secured the lone break of the match for a 3-1 lead en route to the win.
Drugdova and Herea then clinched the point with a 6-4 win over Drozd and Helena Narmont at No. 3. Texas broke first in the match for a 3-2 lead, which was the first of three-straight breaks for a 4-3 advantage. The Longhorns then consolidated their last break for 5-3, and the final two games were also held for the UT win.
That match at No. 1 was left unfinished with the No. 63 duo of Bowers and freshman Ariana Anazagasty-Pursoo staking to a 5-4 lead over the No. 24 pair of Otway and Pascual. Texas served first and after each team held for 1-1, each team broke for 2-2. The rest of the match then remained on serve until play stopped.
