NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Freshman guard Tre Johnson registered a team-high 15 points, but Texas (15-9, 4-7 SEC) dropped an 86-78 decision at Vanderbilt (17-6, 5-5 SEC) on Saturday afternoon inside historic Memorial Gymnasium. This marked UT's first game inside Memorial Gymnasium on Vanderbilt's campus since the 1988-89 season.
Johnson converted 3-of-6 from three-point range and 2-of-3 free throws while tying his career highs in both rebounds (five) and assists (five) in 38 minutes. Senior Arthur Kaluma recorded 12 points (6-9 FT), seven rebounds and tied his season high with five assists in 35 minutes, while graduate Kadin Shedrick posted 12 points (5-6 FT), six rebounds (five offensive) and tied his season high with four blocked shots in 22 minutes. Graduate Julian Larry tallied 11 points (4-8 FG) and set a season high with five rebounds in 32 minutes, and junior Jordan Pope added 11 points and tied his collegiate career high with seven rebounds in 26 minutes.
Texas jumped out to a 9-2 advantage following a pair of Shedrick free throws at the 17:43 mark. After a Devon Pryor three-point play gave the Longhorns a 12-8 lead with 14:39 remaining, the Commodores scored 12-straight points to grab a 20-12 cushion following a MJ Collins three-pointer at the 10:47 mark.
A Tyler Nickel three-pointer gave Vanderbilt a 33-24 advantage with 6:45 left, before Texas closed the half on a 15-2 run to take a 39-35 lead into the break. The Longhorns allowed the Commodores to hit just one of their final 12 field goal attempts to end the first half.
Vanderbilt opened the second half with a 5-0 spurt to take a 40-39 advantage following a Chris Manon layup at the 19:28 mark. After a Jason Edwards jumper evened the contest at 44-44 with 17:41 remaining, the Longhorns went on a 10-0 run over the next three-and-a-half minutes to build a 54-44 cushion following a Larry jumper at the 14:04 mark. The Commodores responded with a 9-2 spurt over the next three minutes to trim the margin to 56-53 after a Nickel three-pointer with 11:08 left.
A Johnson three-pointer increased the Texas margin to 61-56 at the 10:04 mark, but Vanderbilt answered with five-straight points to tie the score at 61-61 after a pair of A.J. Hoggard free throws with 8:39 remaining. A Jayson Kent three-pointer gave the Longhorns a 65-61 cushion at the 6:51 mark, but the Commodores used a 10-0 spurt to take a 71-65 advantage following an Edwards three-pointer with 4:58 remaining. A pair of Johnson free throws trimmed the deficit to 71-67 at the 4:37 mark, but that was as close as the Longhorns would get the rest of the way.
Texas returns to the court when it hosts No. 3/3 Alabama on Tuesday, Feb. 11. Tip is set for 8 p.m. CT at Moody Center, and the game will be televised nationally by ESPN.
