AUSTIN, Texas — Senior forward Arthur Kaluma registered a team-high 15 points, but Texas (16-13, 5-11 SEC) dropped an 83-67 decision to Georgia (18-11, 6-10 SEC) on Saturday night in Moody Center. The contest marked the first matchup between Texas and Georgia played in Austin since the 1998-99 season.
Kalama, who led four Texas players in scoring on the night, converted 6-of-12 field goals, including 3-of-8 from three-point range, to go along with a team-high seven rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks in 29 minutes. Graduate Jayson Kent registered 14 points (4-7 FG, 2-3 threes, 4-8 FT) and five rebounds in 24 minutes. Freshman Tre Johnson posted 12 points (5-6 FT), four assists and three rebounds in 38 minutes, while junior Jordan Pope added 10 points (4-9 FG), three rebounds and three assists in 36 minutes.
Georgia jumped out to a 9-2 advantage following a Silas Demary Jr. three-pointer at the 15:30 mark and led from start-to-finish during the contest. The Longhorns answered by scoring six-straight points to trim the deficit to 9-8 after a Johnson three-point play with 12:19 remaining, but the Bulldogs used a 12-2 spurt over the next four-and-a-half minutes to build a 21-10 cushion following a Blue Cain free throw at the 7:44 mark.
A Johnson three-pointer cut the margin to 23-15 with 6:45 left, but Georgia responded with an 11-2 run over the next two minutes to increase its advantage to 34-17 after a R.J. Godfrey three-point play at the 4:37 mark. The Bulldogs pushed the lead to as much as 20 points (43-23) with 1:30 remaining, before taking a 46-29 cushion into the break.
Georgia built its advantage to as much as 27 points (63-36) following a Somto Cyril dunk at the 13:49 mark. After a Demary Jr. jumper gave the Bulldogs a 67-40 lead with 11:30 left, the Longhorns went on a 17-5 run over the next six minutes to trim the deficit to 72-57 following a Kaluma layup at the 5:23 mark. A Kaluma three-pointer cut the lead to 74-60 with 3:39 remaining, but that was as close as Texas could get for the remainder of the contest.
Texas returns to action when it travels to Starkville, Miss., to face No. 24/24 Mississippi State on Tuesday, March 4. Tip is set for 7 p.m. CT at Humphrey Coliseum, and the game will be televised nationally by SEC Network.
