Kavan tosses seventh career complete game shutout as No. 1/2 Softball earns 21st win
03.05.2025 | Softball
Teagan Kavan tossed 103 pitches to 25 Baylor batters and allowed just four baserunners.
AUSTIN, Texas – As Teagan Kavan toed the pitching rubber at 6:02 p.m. to begin Texas' eventual 4-0 win over Baylor, all those in attendance throughout Red & Charline McCombs Field were living in Central Time. But by 6:03 p.m., all clocks had been flipped to T-Time.
And after just five pitches, Kavan recorded what turned out to be the first of her 11 strikeouts, marking the third career time the Texas sophomore right-handed pitcher fanned 10-or-more opposing batters in a single game and first time since setting a career high with 18 in nine innings of work against Texas Tech on Feb. 14, 2025. Kavan also struck out 12 batters in seven innings against Northwestern to clinch the NCAA Austin Regional on May 19, 2024.
Over the course of the 1-hour, 59-minute, seven-inning contest, Kavan (7-1) struck out multiple Baylor (10-11) batters in four different innings: first, third, sixth and seventh. She also struck out one batter in the second and fourth innings. Despite not recording a strikeout in the top of the fifth, Kavan did set down the Bears in order on 12 pitches with each out occurring in the infield: ground out to Kaydee Bennett at second, line out to Mia Scott at third and a ground out to herself in the circle.
Throughout the night, Baylor's offense managed a runner in scoring position on just two occasions: Presleigh Pilon reaching third with two outs in the top of the first and Turiya Coleman advancing to second following a throwing error with two outs in the top of the fourth. Kavan and the Longhorn defense went on to strand both Pilon and Coleman on base.
Meanwhile, as Kavan was holding Baylor out of the run column, the Bears pitching was allowing Texas into it as the at least one run in every even-numbered frame on the night: Vanessa Quiroga drove in a run on a fielder's choice in the second, Leighann Goode connected for a two-run home run in the fourth and Joley Mitchell touched home plate on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Shylien Brister in the sixth.
FROM HEAD COACH MIKE WHITE
"I thought (Teagan Kavan) really controlled (Baylor's) hitters really well. Obviously, she was trying to find the strike zone early on, but once she found it, she was really controlling it using all of pitches, up and down as well as her change-up as well. She was in total control (all night)."
FROM SOPHOMORE PITCHER TEAGAN KAVAN
"I felt good (in the pitching circle tonight). I felt really relaxed, which was something I wanted to work on today. I just tried to stay calm throughout the entire day and I think that really helped me out there tonight. I just tried to not make the game bigger than it is. I just went out there and trusted my stuff, trusted my defense behind me and trusted myself."
GAME NOTES

- By striking out the side in the top of the sixth, Teagan Kavan has now accounted for six of the 10 three-strikeout innings by Texas pitching this season.
- Wednesday night's performance by Teagan Kavan marked the first seven-inning complete game shutout by a Texas pitcher against Baylor since May 8, 2022, when Hailey Dolcini faced 24 Baylor batters and did not allow a run after throwing 97 pitches.
