Garrett and Smallwood named SEC Runners of the Week

Longhorn hurdlers win first SEC weekly awards of 2024-25 season
AUSTIN, Texas – Akala Garrett of the No. 2 Texas women's track and field program and Kendrick Smallwood of the No. 5 men's program earned the Longhorns first SEC weekly honor of the 2024-25 season.
Garrett was named the women's Co-Runner of the Week after she ran away with two Texas Relays title with two top-two times in the NCAA. The sophomore recorded a personal best in the 100-meter hurdle prelims at 13.09 and later won the event with a wind-aided time of 12.75 (2.6). Her finals time ranks as the No. 1 time in both the SEC and the NCAA. She also won the 400-meter hurdle invitational with a time of 55.49, which ranks second in the NCAA and third in the world.
Smallwood was named men's runner of the week after winning the 110-meter hurdles at the Texas Relays with an electric wind-aided time of 13.07 (2.3). The time ranks as the ninth-fastest all-conditions time in collegiate history. The time is also the second-fastest in the world this season for wind-aided times and ranks first in both SEC and the NCAA.
On his way to the final, Smallwood broke the Texas program record that stood for 11 years with a time of 13.35. The time ranks third on World Athletics' list this season.
